Obesity is a growing problem, not just in Iowa, but all over the country. We are expanding sideways at an alarmingly fast pace and the effects our extra weight has on the rest of our health can be? devastating. Obesity is linked to several general health problems including heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer and diabetes.
One general health problem that you may not have known was linked to obesity is periodontal disease. May is National Health and Fitness Month and in order to help you understand the depths that obesity reaches, we want to make sure our readers are aware of the risks involved in being overweight or obese.
Periodontal disease is an inflammatory disease that affects one?s gums (gingival connective tissue). Once a bacteria makes its way into your oral tissue, your body?s immune system reacts to protect you and inflammation is the result.
Gingivitis is the preliminary stage of periodontal disease and is reversible with a good oral health regime. Periodontitis is the more severe periodontal disease; it is not reversible and it can result in the loss of teeth or worse.
Now for the surprising part; not only is there a link between periodontal disease and obesity, obesity is actually a risk factor for periodontal diseases. This means that gingivitis or periodontitis can be a direct result of being obese.(1)? Conversely, if you have periodontal disease, you are at risk for an increased body weight. It is beneficial to watch what you eat and exercise regularly. Your whole body (including your mouth) will be thankful!
