BT buys ESPN UK and Ireland, waves goodbye to ESPN Classic

BT's got far more important things to do than fill in the gaps in its fiber broadband coverage, like blowing around £10 million ($15 million) on buying ESPN's UK and Ireland channels from Disney. BT is trying to compete with Sky on sporting rights, and needs a channel to broadcast 38 Premier League games a year for the next three years -- which cost the phone company £738 million ($1.1 billion). At the same time, ESPN is shuttering ESPN Classic, the satellite channel dedicated to showing classic sporting events free of charge. Broadly speaking, BT just knows how to brighten our Mondays.

Cortisone can increase risk of acute pancreatitis

Feb. 25, 2013 ? A new study from Karolinska Institutet in Sweden shows that cortisone -- a hormone used in certain medicines -- increases the risk of acute pancreatitis. The results are published in the scientific journal JAMA Internal Medicine. According to the researchers, they suggest that patients treated with cortisone in some forms should be informed of the risks and advised to refrain from alcohol and smoking.

Acute pancreatitis is the most common disease of the pancreas and is caused by a sudden inflammation of the pancreas. Most patients recover without complications. However in 15 to 20 per cent of patients the disease develops to a life-threatening condition. The most common causes of the disease are gallstones and high alcohol consumption, but in a quarter of patients the causes are unknown.

Previous studies based on individual cases have indicated a link between acute pancreatitis and some medicines, such as preparations containing cortisone. Endogenous cortisone derives from an adrenal hormone and is related to stress and the regulation of the circadian rhythm. The most common form in humans is cortisol (or hydrocortisone). Synthetic cortisone is used to treat a number of medical conditions, such as asthma and autoimmune diseases (e.g. rheumatic diseases).

The present study is the first systematic study to demonstrate the relationship between medical cortisone and acute pancreatitis. Six thousand patients diagnosed with acute pancreatitis between 2006 and 2008 were compared with 61,000 healthy controls. The results show that people treated with cortisone in tablet form ran a 70 per cent higher risk of developing acute pancreatitis. This connection was observed after three days' medication, substantiating the evidence that the causal factor was the cortisone rather than the treated disease per se.

"However, there was no observable increase in risk for people who used aerosol cortisone, such as asthma inhalers," says the study's principal author Dr Omid Sadr-Azodi. "But people who start a course of cortisone are recommended to refrain from drinking and smoking, which are risk factors for acute pancreatitis."

Pentagon unveils plan to tap potential of mobile devices

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Pentagon unveiled a plan on Tuesday to ultimately enable the Defense Department's 600,000 users of smartphones, computer tablets and other mobile devices to rapidly share classified and protected data using the latest commercial technologies.

The system aims to quickly enable the latest technologies to be securely used by the military while remaining "device agnostic," said Major General Robert Wheeler, a Defense Department deputy chief information officer.

That sets the stage for an intensified struggle for Pentagon customers among BlackBerry devices, Apple's iPhones or iPads, and units using Google's Android platform.

The Defense Department currently has more than 600,000 mobile device users, including 470,000 with BlackBerries, 41,000 who have Apple operating systems, and 8,700 who use Android devices.

The new plan will result in the use of a much wider variety of mobile devices across the military. Currently most devices using Apple and Google platforms are in pilot or test programs, officials said.

Few commercial devices are used for classified communications, whereas the new system aims to bolster security of commercially available devices so they can be used for classified information, they said.

Wheeler said the implementation plan aimed to ensure that mobile devices, wireless infrastructure and mobile applications remain "reliable, secure and flexible enough to keep up with the fast-changing technologies of today."

He said the department has a broad range of mobile device users, from the chairman and planners on the Joint Chiefs of Staff to policymakers and soldiers on the battlefield, all of whom would be affected by the implementation plan.

The military services would decide which devices to buy and provide to users based on need. The system would not initially enable an individual service member to purchase their own mobile devices and use them on the Pentagon's networks, but that is a longer-range goal if security can be assured, officials said.

The plan is a step toward implementing the "mobility strategy" the Pentagon released last June. The strategy aims to use smartphone, tablet and other mobile technologies to improve information sharing and collaboration across the department.

The plan aims to "align the various mobile devices, pilots and initiatives across the department under common objectives to ensure the war fighter benefits from these activities," Teri Takai, the Pentagon's chief information officer, said in a statement.

"This is not simply about embracing the newest technology - it is about keeping the department's workforce relevant in an era when information accessibility and cybersecurity play a critical role in missions," she said.

As part of the implementation plan, the department has asked companies to submit proposals for creating a mobile device management platform and an applications store where users can get the programs they need for their devices.

The mobile device management platform would need a number of security features, such detecting malware and enabling officials to remotely delete data from the device, according to documents outlining the plan.

(AP Photo/Keith Srakocic, File)

(AP) ? The story has more irony than a Greek tragedy. Three sisters from a devoutly Catholic family have seen their personal and political careers ruined by a scandal that began with, of all things, a letter to some nuns.

Thursday's conviction of suspended state Supreme Court Justice Joan Orie Melvin along with her aide and sister, Janine Orie, on campaign corruption charges mean they might join a third sister ? former state Sen. Jane Orie ? in state prison. No sentencing date has been set.

The former senator was sentenced last year to 2? to 10 years for using her state-paid staff to run her campaigns, though she was acquitted of having them campaign for Melvin, then a lower appellate court judge, who was running for the Supreme Court in 2003 and 2009. Joan Orie Melvin and Janine Orie were convicted in a spinoff investigation and found guilty of similarly misusing Melvin's former staff and the senator's.

Even before the convictions, their careers ? and the family from which they sprang ? were extraordinary.

Dr. John Orie, now 90, and his late wife, Jean, raised nine children including five attorneys, Joan and Jane among them; two cardiologists; a teacher; and a human resources manager, Janine, who worked for her sister Joan Orie Melvin in the lower Superior Court before moving up with her to the Supreme Court.

"It's all pretty unbelievable," said John Burkoff, a university of Pittsburgh law professor who has closely followed the cases. "Whatever you thought about the Orie sisters, whether you liked or didn't like them, you have to look at all of this as tragic."

Jim Roddey is a prominent businessman who heads the Republican Party in Allegheny County, where Republicans are outnumbered more than 2 to 1 by Democrats and where Pittsburgh, the county seat, hasn't elected a GOP mayor since the Great Depression.

Before 2010, when Republican Tom Corbett was elected governor, Jane Orie was the state Senate majority whip ? the highest-ranking elected Republican politician not just in Pennsylvania, but also of several states in the Northeast, Roddey said. And Melvin, elected in November 2009, was one of seven members of the state's highest court.

And now? Jane Orie resigned her Senate seat in May, and Melvin's status on the state's highest court figures to change, one way or another.

State lawmakers have already asked her to resign or face articles of impeachment. If those are approved by the state House, Melvin would be tried by the Senate, which could remove her from office if she hasn't already been removed by the state's Court of Judicial Discipline.

Now that she has been convicted, Melvin has 30 days to respond to charges of misconduct filed with that court by the state's Judicial Conduct Board. If it is determined Melvin has violated professional conduct rules or the state Constitution, or brought disrepute to the judiciary, the court can remove her from office.

Melvin's criminal defense attorneys and her disciplinary court attorney didn't return calls Friday.

The Ories have argued the prosecution is the result of a political vendetta by Allegheny County District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr., a Democrat, who has repeatedly denied ulterior motives.

When the investigation first became public in late 2009, the sisters claimed they were being targeted because Zappala's family has interests in legalized gambling, which the Ories opposed expanding in Pennsylvania.

The allegations grew uglier, when Melvin ? after it was known Sen. Orie was being investigated but before the justice was charged ? called for an audit of two child care centers that paid kickbacks to two judges in northeastern Pennsylvania's Luzerne County who sent troubled youths to the facilities. The facilities were co-owned by Gregory Zappala, the prosecutor's brother, who was never charged in the scheme and has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.

To this day, some Orie supporters still believe those politics ? not justice ? drove the prosecution.

Roddey acknowledges the sisters' success in a politically hostile environment has something to do with that chatter.

"That's part of it," Roddey said. "But the other half of the equation is that her prosecutor was Stephen Zappala, and Joan's biggest public battle was she chastised the Supreme Court for what happened in Luzerne County."

Whatever the motivations, two juries have now found enough evidence to bring the overachieving siblings from triumph to tragedy despite a raft of supporters ? Sen. Orie spent $420 on a chartered bus to bring 50 character witnesses to her trial ? and, even, efforts to seek divine intervention.

During the investigation, which centered on the sisters' emails, prosecutors stumbled onto messages Sen. Orie and Melvin sent to the "angel lady," a Philadelphia psychic who read her client's written questions aloud before claiming to receive a whispered answer from an angel.

The senator and justice sought assurances from the $85-an-hour medium that Zappala's investigation wouldn't result in criminal charges.

But rather than being touched by an angel, the sisters were undone by some nuns.

That happened in late October 2009 ? days before Melvin won her Supreme Court seat ? when a Senate intern complained to Zappala that Sen. Orie's staff was doing campaign work for Melvin.

The complaint centered on a letter Sen. Orie wrote on Melvin's campaign stationery asking Pittsburgh-area nuns to vote for Melvin.

When Orie and Melvin learned of the whistleblowing intern, the senator had a staffer prepare another letter ? a "cover-up" letter, according to prosecutors. This time, Sen. Orie ? on her own stationery ? spoke about civic events of interest to nuns but didn't mention Melvin.

Prosecutors contend the letter was created to make it appear the intern was simply mistaken about what she saw and was never mailed. Eventually, Sen. Orie's and Melvin's staffs told a grand jury about other illegal campaign work done in Orie's Senate offices and Melvin's chambers.

"Frankly, it's a smart group of people. How could they put themselves in this kind of situation?" Burkoff said. "This is the kind of thing we'll be puzzling about for years."

Protests over Medicaid follow Perry to Washington, D.C.

Gov. Rick Perry

Concerns about Texas opting out of Medicaid expansion dollars have followed Gov. Rick Perry to Washington, D.C. to a fundraising breakfast in his honor Friday morning.

People from Houston and Dallas and with the Texas Organizing Project ? a membership-based organization advocating on behalf of working families across the state ? have gathered outside the National Republican Club of Capitol Hill which is hosting the breakfast organized by the Texas State Society. They're demanding Perry accept billions of dollars offered by the federal government to expand Medicaid.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott accepted federal funds this week to cover the poor and uninsured leaving Texas as the last big-state hold out, the Texas Tribune reports.

Texas businesses could also benefit from the expansion, according to the Texas Hospital Association.

Why Snacking at Night Is Bad For You

Eating that bowl of Cocoa Puffs at night may be much worse than having it in the morning. The body tends to turn more of that food into fat at night, while turning it into fuel during the day, new research suggests.

The study, published yesterday (Feb. 21) in the journal Current Biology, found that mice's ability to regulate their blood sugar varied throughout the day. In addition, disrupting their circadian clock, which signals sleep and wakefulness among other things to the body, caused them to put on more fat.

The findings could explain why night-shift workers are more prone to diabetes and obesity.

"Disrupting your biological clock leads to a disruption of metabolism such that there's more of a tendency to put on fat," even with the same amount of caloric intake or diet, said study co-author Carl Johnson, a chronobiologist at Vanderbilt University. "It's not only what you eat but when you eat it that's important."

Night creatures

Several studies in the past have shown that shift workers gain more weight and are likelier to develop diabetes. Past work also showed that mice (which are nocturnal) put on more fat if they can only eat during the day, even at the same caloric intake. Researchers suspected the circadian clock played a role, though exactly how was a mystery.

To find out, Johnson and his colleagues tested how well mice's bodies processed food across the 24-hour cycle. During daylight hours, when mice wouldn't normally eat, they were less reponsive to insulin, a hormone that tells the body's tissues to take sugar from the blood so it can be used as energy. (The excess sugar not used as energy gets turned into fat.)?

In addition, when they disrupted the mice's circadian clocks by keeping them in dim red light all day, the mice developed signs of?insulin resistance, meaning the tissues didn't respond to insulin's signal to take up sugar, and they put on more fat. Insulin resistance has also been tied to diabetes and heart disease in humans.

Eat early

The findings hint that snacking late into the night may be worse for people than eating earlier in the day, Johnson said.

The study is impressive, Satchidananda Panda, a biologist at the Salk Institute in La Jolla, Calif., who was not involved in the study, wrote in an email.

"This paper for the first time conclusively shows there is a circadian rhythm in insulin sensitivity in animals and potentially in humans as well," he wrote.

Because older studies have shown that humans have daily rhythms in their blood glucose, even with constant sugar infusion, researchers already suspected that insulin sensitivity waxed and waned throughout the day, he said.

White House Takes on China With Anti-Theft Trade Plan

This transcript is automatically generated

But the White House is taking the gloves off and threatening China over all of its alleged recent cyber attacks on American companies those companies include.

GM and Dow Chemical protecting American innovation is a top priority but pressing foreign leaders just isn't enough.

We need to do more and joining me now is Frederick Layton former National Security Agency director and a cyber security analyst welcome back to the show colonel it's good to see you.

And when people say we need to do more how do you.

Do more win a country that almost has us by the economic stranglehold because the Chinese look at the statistics and a bit.

But they -- a lot of our debt and we don't want to make them upset -- it.

Well that's part of the problem that registry to be with you again here's the issue -- you have a situation we're not only do they have us by the economic stranglehold but they also have a situation.

Where they are trying to really go ahead of us in a developmental sense -- that's why they're stealing our intellectual property.

So what we're looking at doing here is we have to respond in kind.

And -- that doesn't just mean trade sanctions which in essence is what the White House is talking about.

They can be opt in to they could be increased by.

A substantial amount if the need is there but it also calls for an active defense and active way of approaching them in making sure that they understand.

But the minute that they attack us either they're going to be attacked in the cyber realm.

Or other consequences will occur to them.

All of -- limit I let let me show com the viewers exactly what I mean by economic stranglehold the Chinese are still the largest foreign holder of US debt.

December 2011 -- one point 15 trillion.

December 2012 it was one point two trillion Japanese are catching up with the Japanese aren't nearly as much a cyber threat perhaps as the Chinese.

If we work to retaliate if I got -- imagine and correct me if I'm wrong.

That our armed security forces kind of do the same kind of cyber stuff back at them don't -- And if if we do wouldn't they perhaps threaten us -- those treasuries may be -- moment and may be taken our economy.

Well there's certainly a risk for that kind of a tit for tat in in this business Adam but.

What you're looking at is yes we do have the capability to go after them and -- what is basically.

A committee could not kinetic but computer network attack type attitude and if we engage in computer network attack.

That then becomes the area that we need to focus on and to have some specific targets to go after.

Now that is something while we have the capability of doing that we don't do that unless we get presidential authorization to do that and that.

In its big sense has never really happened.

So so our options are as you said earlier on trade sanctions but -- -- do we even have the ability.

As the biggest trading partner with China -- a -- that Europe's their biggest trading partner but such an important part.

Of our economy do we have the ability to do trade sanctions without hurting ourselves in the process.

Well that's always part of the problem but there are certain goods for example T shirts or something like that they will come in.

You know from China at a very cheap rate but there -- the countries that produce the same kinds of goods so if you go after -- say get them from Vietnam instead of China.

Then you have an alternative supplier and you can circumvent the Chinese system there's there's a way to do that.

But in terms of cyber attacks.

You have to would we look at what is happening and what you have to do was you have to make it more difficult for them.

To go after our networks and that includes increasing our defenses.

Making sure that our defenses are not only be better -- but also.

A step ahead of the game and that's becomes very difficult but the Chinese as was evident by the report that the -- -- corporation released earlier this week.

The Chinese are not the ten foot tall guerrillas they are basically.

Just humans like you and I and -- they do make mistakes.

You have to stand up -- bully you gotta stands until bully when your being that's right.

That's right all right -- -- -- -- hate to cut it short but I've -- -- let you go at this point former NSA deputy director really appreciate your being here with us to discuss this issue.

My -- -- of thanks for having me coming up.

Syrian violence threatens ancient treasures

Reuters file

People shop at the main market, or souk, in the Syrian city of Aleppo.

By Reuters

AMMAN ? Syrian museums have locked away thousands of ancient treasures to protect them from looting and violence but one of humanity's greatest cultural heritages remains in grave peril, the archaeologist charged with their protection said.

Aleppo's medieval covered market has already been gutted by fires which also ripped through the city's Umayyad mosque. Illegal excavations have threatened tombs in the desert town of Palmyra and the Bronze Age settlement of Ebla, and Interpol is hunting a 2,700-year-old statue taken from the city of Hama.

In a country which also boasts stunning Crusader castles, Roman ruins and a history stretching back through the great empires of the Middle East to the dawn of human civilization, the task of safeguarding that heritage from modern conflict is a daunting responsibility.

Maamoun Abdulkarim, head of Syria's antiquities and museums, says it is a battle for the nation's very existence.

"We emptied Syria's museums. They are in effect empty halls, with the exception of large pieces that are difficult to move," Abdulkarim told Reuters during a visit to neighboring Jordan.

Tens of thousands of artifacts spanning 10,000 years of history were removed to specialist warehouses to avoid a repeat of the storming of Baghdad's museum by looters a decade ago, in the wake of the U.S. invasion and overthrow of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, he said.

Syria's own 23-month-old conflict is tearing the country apart and has raised international concerns over the fate of one of the richest and most diverse historical collections of any single nation.

The UN cultural body UNESCO says it is concerned for the fate of six World Heritage sites including the old cities of Damascus, Aleppo and Bosra and the imposing Crusader castle, Crac des Chevaliers.

Many have become battlegrounds between rebels taking cover among ruins and troops who shell indiscriminately, the damage recorded in relentless video images of the fighting.

If looters ever got their hands on the museum treasures, that would mark the final demise of Syria, Abdulkarim said.

"If they reach these places then my conviction is that Syria would no longer exist... It would signal the end of the end," said the 46-year-old French-educated archaeology professor who took over as Syria's Director General of Antiquities and Museums six months ago. "Syria as we know it would then be over."

Bronze statue
Numerous Bronze Age civilizations left successive marks on Syria including Babylonians, Assyrians, and Hittites. They in turn were replaced by Greeks, Sassanians, Persians, Romans and Arabs, many choosing Syrian cities for their capitals.

European Crusaders left impressive castles and the Ottoman Empire also made its mark over five centuries.

Abdulkarim said the most significant pieces to go missing since the start of the conflict were a gilt bronze statue from around 2,000 years ago that was stolen from the city of Hama ? and placed on Interpol's 'Most Wanted' list of art works a year ago - and a marble piece looted from the garden of Apamea museum.

But priceless artifacts in the northern town of Maarat al-Noman were saved when the local community ensured the museum's famous mosaic portals were kept safe during fierce clashes.

In Hama, local neighborhood youths protected the museum's Roman and Byzantine statues from looters until they were taken to safety, Abdulkarim said. "They closed the doors of the museum and were able to protect it from disaster."

Dozens of archaeological sites have been targeted by illegal excavation and trafficking, though they account for less than 1 percent of the 10,000 sites across the country, he said.

The diggers concentrate mainly on sites which have long been the focus of illicit trafficking, such as the ancient city of Apamea, north of Hama, that flourished during Roman and Byzantine periods, and is famous for its 1,850-metre colonnade.

"Vandalism in the city is an old phenomenon and is not related to the crisis, but the thieves who are active in this area have found greater freedom to operate during this crisis," Abdulkarim said.

Video footage from March last year, documented in a report by archaeologist Emma Cunliffe at Britain's Durham University, also appears to show tanks stationed alongside the Apamea colonnade.

Abdulkarim appealed to the warring parties to spare the country's many Crusader castles, some of which have been in the thick of the conflict and even been converted into army barracks or rebel hideouts.

Crac des Chevaliers, the supreme example of Crusader castle building, has suffered minor damage while Aleppo citadel's main gate was sightly damaged along with its northern tower, he said.

Gutted souks
The greatest damage has been to a collection of seven old markets in Aleppo, unsurpassed in the Middle East, that were gutted by fire that also damaged the city's Great Umayyad Mosque, Abdulkarim said.

"We have lost the seven souks completely, forever," he said, although the continued fighting had prevented any mission from assessing the full extent of the structural damage.

In northeastern Syria, major ancient sites in Tell Mozan near Qazmishli were well protected by Kurdish groups that have taken control in the region, Abdulkarim said.

U.S. historian Giorgio Buccellati, who has worked at Tell Mozan and checks photos of the site daily on the Internet, told Reuters there had been "absolutely no looting" there.

In southern Syria, army shelling had damaged some ancient homes but not the ruin of Bosra, which contains one of the best preserved Roman theaters and a major monument, Abdulkarim said. His comments were confirmed by a refugee who spoke to Reuters this week after fleeing the town.

"The army had shelled the old quarter where rebels had dug in and there has been damage to an old church," Abdullah Zubi said after crossing into Jordan. But the Roman theater, in an army-controlled sector, suffered no damage although army troops are dug in nearby, he said.

The ruins of what may be the world's first city, a mound near the Syrian-Iraqi border town called Tell Brak, have so far been spared, while illegal excavation of unexplored tombs in the ancient desert city of Palmyra had halted, Abdulkarim said.

In some cases those illegal digs stopped simply because thieves failed to locate any treasures, as happened at the Bronze Age site at Ebla after they dug holes in an ancient courtyard at the royal palace.

More than 4,000 items, including beads, coins, statues and mosaic panels, were turned over by Syrian customs last year to Abdulkarim's department, although nearly a third of those turned out to be counterfeit.

The department is also working with UNESCO and Interpol to track down 18 mosaic panels smuggled to Lebanon.

Combined losses so far remained just a modest fraction of Syria's priceless collection, Abdulkarim said, but added that protracted and escalating violence could usher in anarchy and more brazen theft.

"So far the gangs and thieves are small scale operators and no organized international gangs have surfaced," he said. "But what could be terrifying is that column heads and columns and large stones could be stolen...and smuggled out of Syria."

"If this happens, God forbid, then we are approaching the start of the tragic demolition of our past and future."

Child-care worker charged in Philadelphia girl's abduction, rape

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - A child-care worker accused of disguising herself in traditional Muslim clothing to abduct a 5-year-old girl was arraigned on Friday on rape and kidnapping charges and held on $4 million bail.

Seized as a key piece of evidence in the case was a multi-colored macaw that the child told authorities lived in the home where she had been held captive overnight last month, police and the victim's lawyer, Tom Kline, said.

Authorities have questioned four people in the case but so far charged only Christina Regusters, 19, who worked at an after-school program in West Philadelphia that the victim attended.

Regusters was accused of posing as the girl's mother, who wears Muslim clothing, by dressing in a black headscarf that covered her face in order to take the child out of school on January 14.

Early the next morning, the child was discovered in a nearby playground, partially clothed.

Regusters was arraigned on Friday on 14 criminal counts, including rape, aggravated assault, kidnapping and indecent assault.

"It's just a horrible, horrible crime, what they did to her," Kline said.

The talking bird, seized with a search warrant, was being held by the city's animal control division, said Captain John Darby, head of the police Special Victims Unit.

Kline declined to confirm local media reports that the assailants used the bird to force the child into silence and submission and threatened it would peck out her eyes if she disobeyed. He said information about the bird led to Regusters' arrest.

"It was the fact that the bird was present that was significant, not any particular thing the bird said," Kline said.

Neither Kline nor Darby would provide details of the rape charge against Regusters.

Darby said originally three other occupants of the West Philadelphia house were taken into custody as well, an adult man and woman, and a male juvenile. They have since been released.

"The investigation is still very active," said Darby, who declined to describe a motive.

After her arraignment, Regusters was held on $4 million bail and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for March 6, the office of the Philadelphia district attorney said.

Joy Stewart, Homeless Florida Grandmother, Receives Home For Valentine's Day (VIDEO)

NORTH LAUDERDALE -- If one could paint a picture of dedication and determination, it would look a lot like Joy Stewart.

"She's more of a man than most of the men I know," son Michael Johnson, 24, said. "That's a superwoman."

Superwoman and her super grandchildren were handed the keys to a newly renovated home on Valentine's Day thanks to a group of volunteers who were shocked into action when they learned of her misfortune.

"There were times I really never thought I would make another step," Stewart said. "But you know what? I did."

The 40-something grandmother spent the last nine years fighting to keep her addicted daughter's four children together while living in a car, a truck, an abandoned house and on any concrete floor they could lay their heads, said Johnson. He went from living in his own car to preparing for graduation from Florida A&M University in May.

Stewart went to New York to get the grandchildren out of the foster care system. They returned to North Lauderdale, but before long the ordeal left her jobless, homeless and almost penniless, living on $360 per month because the New York foster case disqualified her from getting any assistance in Florida.

The need to provide for granddaughter Keneaka, now 7, and grandsons Ronique, 8, Neiko, 9, and Naquan, 12, has kept her going.

"Every one of them was born with [health] issues," Johnson said. "The only medicine we have is love."

At one point, Stewart and her grandchildren were living out of a car parked behind a store. She collected rainwater so the kids could brush their teeth before going to school.

Broward Sheriff's Deputy Ed Ragauskas knew one of the children from North Lauderdale Elementary and learned about the family's predicament in early December.

"I found out she was living at this new address that was totally decimated. It was a shock to me, obviously," he said. "I came in, saw the conditions and knew we had to do something. We weren't here to be the bad guys and take the kids away from her. We're here to help her."

That's when Broward Sheriff's Detective Lisa Sokol and others got involved.

"We sat down [with Stewart] and talked about her story and what got my heart was she was the most humble person you'd ever meet in your life," Sokol said.

Before long, merchants were donating food and toys for Christmas, plus appliances and furniture. Rebuilding Together of Broward County and the South Florida-based "Designing Spaces" television show teamed up to renovate a foreclosed house that a sympathetic acquaintance had signed over to Stewart. The mortgage lender forgave the debt, so Stewart owns the house free and clear.

"I'm somewhere between Cloud Nine and infinity," Stewart said upon seeing her new home for the first time Thursday.

Her oldest, Naquan, was grateful for the simple things.

"I can actually sleep in my own bed, by myself, and have my own space and my own covers," he said.

The next challenge for Stewart and her young family may be just getting used to living an ordinary life.

"With perseverance you get results," she said. "Perseverance."

LA Lakers owner Jerry Buss hospitalized with cancer -report

(Reuters) - Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss has been hospitalized for several months with an undisclosed form of cancer, USA Today reported on Friday, citing an unnamed source.

The Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday that Buss, 79, has spent time in the intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, according to his son Jim.

Officials at Cedars declined to comment, citing privacy laws. The Lakers team office also declined to comment.

Buss purchased the National Basketball Association team in 1979. The team has won 10 NBA championships since then.
