Needs
Harrison Stringfellow Architects is a female led architecture practice, established in 2009. The practice was started on a part time basis but due to their success, in late 2011, both Directors took the plunge and gave up positions in other practices to become self-employed and give the business its best chance of success.
Getting business was not a problem for HSA, but determining which type of business was the most financially beneficial and best meets its values was a challenge, which required some analysis, thinking through and development of a prioritised strategy to drive the business. This would in turn allow the Directors to feel more in control and confident that they have the time to deliver their commitments.
What we did:
Harrison Stringfellow Architects engaged Panacea Associates to facilitate the development of a clear vision, mission statement, values and goals for the business. For the 3 key types of business, (dream, cream and bread & butter), quarterly and annual targets were set which would allow the Directors to monitor the current level of each of these types of business and therefore identify which need to be sought, if targets are not being met. It also helped planning staff time, to ensure that the team has the capacity to deliver for its clients, and not let them down.
The targets were then developed into an outline business strategy which is used at weekly and monthly monitoring meetings, and for a quarterly review.
Outcome:
The Directors use the business strategy to drive the business and it forms a key part of their weekly Directors? meeting and time planning for the staff team. The Directors feel more in control and confident that they will not let clients down due to being too busy.
Client Perspective:
?Despite being very busy, the business strategy has helped us to be better at scheduling and planning, using the business strategy for the basis of our minuted Directors? meetings. We now know that we can meet our commitments, and this stops us from feeling stressed and so our energy is put into the job, rather than worrying about whether we have time to do it or not.
Panacea Associates helped us to feel in control and understand that we have the ability to turn down work if it is not the right job for us. It also will help us to assess when we need to sub contract or take on staff, so we can do this in a proactive, rather than reactive way?
