Obama says not threatened by China focus on Africa

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) ? President Barack Obama says he doesn't feel threatened by the fact that other countries, led by China, are investing in Africa. In fact, Obama says the more countries that come to Africa, the merrier.

Obama says he's touring three African nations this week because the United States needs to increase its engagement with a continent that's showing promise and possibility.

He says such interaction is good for the U.S. regardless of what other countries do.

But he cautions that Africa must be wary of outside investment and always ask how it will benefit when other countries come seeking its natural resources or to make other investments.

Obama spoke Saturday during a news conference in South Africa with President Jacob Zuma.

Publisher cancels multibook Paula Deen contract

Paula Deen's publisher has canceled a deal with her for multiple books, including an upcoming cookbook that was the No. 1 seller on Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com, following her admission she used a racial slur.

Ballantine Books announced Friday it would not release "Paula Deen's New Testament: 250 Favorite Recipes, All Lightened Up," which was scheduled for October and was the first of a five-book deal announced early last year. Interest in it had surged as Deen, who grew up in Albany, Ga., and specializes in Southern comfort food, came under increasing attack for acknowledging she had used the N-word.

Ballantine, an imprint of Random House Inc., said it had decided to cancel the book's publication after "careful consideration." It had no comment beyond what was in its brief statement, spokesman Stuart Applebaum said.

Later Friday, Deen's literary agent, Janis Donnaud, said that the entire deal had been called off.

"I am confident that these books will be published and that we will have a new publisher," said Donnaud, who declined to comment on whether she had heard from other publishers.

The trouble for Deen started when comments she made in a court deposition became public. During the deposition in a discrimination lawsuit filed by an ex-employee, Deen admitted using the N-word in the past but denied using it to describe waiters.

Deen said she's not a racist during a tearful "Today" show interview but has lost many of her business relationships. Sears Holdings Corp. and J.C. Penney Co. said Friday that they were cutting ties with Deen following similar announcements from Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Target Corp. and Home Depot.

Last week, the Food Network said that it would not renew her contract. She also was dropped by Smithfield Foods, Caesars Entertainment stripped her name from restaurants and drug company Novo Nordisk said it was suspending its work with her.

Publishers have pulled a wide range of books over the years, usually because of plagiarism, fabrications or other issues with the books themselves. Ballantine's decision highlights a problem for Deen even when the product itself has not been challenged and is in high demand.

Some outlets that might have sold her books, such as Target and Wal-Mart, have cut ties with her. Other stores likely would have been reluctant to promote her new book or to invite her for personal appearances.

Because "Paula Deen's New Testament" was months away from release, no copies had been printed. All purchases had been pre-orders, so refunds aren't necessary.

Women's Rising Consumer Clout Propels Chanel To Top-Brand ...

Chanel

According to a study based on internet search results released yesterday by Digital Luxury Group , Chanel has overtaken Louis Vuitton as the most digitally ?sought-after? fashion brand in China. There are many factors that could have caused this ascension?Chanel, for example, is taking a measured approach to China expansion in order to remain exclusive, while Louis Vuitton has faced the possibility of having become too overexposed . One notable point to observe, however, is that several factors surrounding the label?s success point to the growing purchasing power of women as a major correlation.

First of all, Chanel?s line of beauty products was considered to be a major factor in its popularity in China.?According to Digital Luxury Group Founder and CEO David Sadigh, beauty gave it an edge over second-place Louis Vuitton. ?Chanel is bene?ting from an important level of interest in China, mostly emanating from strong interest from Chinese consumers in its Beauty products, which Louis Vuitton does not have,? he wrote in the report.?Est?e Lauder, the report?s top beauty brand, came in right after Chanel on the total list of the top 50 brands across all luxury sectors. As you can see from the list below, Chanel came in third overall, behind Audi and BMW.

Meanwhile, Chanel?s rank also coincides with affluent Chinese women?s answers to a survey taken for a? January study by the Hurun Report . According to the report, the label?was the the overall number one gifting brand for China?s affluent women, but only came [...]

How hot is it in the western US? Real hot

The heat wave that is gripping the western U.S. is one of the worst in years, with desert locations in the Southwest seeing temperatures approach 120 degrees. To give some perspective on the heat, here are five facts about the punishing nature of the heat wave.

DEATH VALLEY

The desert valley in California will see temperatures approach 130 degrees. The hottest temperature ever recorded on Earth occurred in Death Valley with a reading of 134 degrees, almost 100 years ago to the date in 1913. The park is dotted with locations such as Furnace Creek and Dante's View, and officials are urging people to exercise extreme caution during the heat wave. But sweltering heat is often a big draw for visitors to Death Valley National Park ? especially tourists from Germany and France ? with hotels already booked solid during the hotter months of July and August.

NO ESCAPE

The easiest way to beat the heat in cities like Phoenix is to flee the desert for higher-elevation mountain cities such as Flagstaff, Sedona and Prescott which typically are much cooler. But there won't be much of a break from a heat during this hot spell. Flagstaff could approach the record Saturday of 97 degrees, and Sedona could be in the 110 range.

BE CAREFUL

As if temperatures nearing 120 degrees weren't bad enough, it's even hotter yet inside cars and on concrete and asphalt roads and sidewalks. It can get to 200 degrees on asphalt during peak summer temperatures, presenting all sorts of hazards. Drivers should keep pets and children out of locked cars, and a person who suffers a fall on a sidewalk or a street could end up in the burn unit.

AIRLINES

Bigger jetliners can handle temperatures around 126 and 127 degrees, but airlines this weekend will be closely monitoring the conditions and smaller planes may have flights delayed. When the temperature gets real hot, the air becomes less dense and changes liftoff conditions.

THE BORDER

Immigrants are constantly crossing the border in Arizona regardless of the season ? sometimes with deadly consequences as they succumb to exhaustion and dehydration. At least seven bodies of immigrants have been found in the last week in Arizona, and agents in the Tucson sector rescued more than 170 people from the desert during a 30-day stretch in May and June when temperatures were even lower than expected in the coming days.

(AP) ? At the moment, no woman seems capable of providing much of a challenge to Serena Williams on a tennis court.

She's won 33 matches in a row, and 76 of her past 79. If she wins five more this fortnight, as almost everyone expects, Williams will earn a second consecutive Wimbledon title and 17th Grand Slam championship overall.

So how about playing an exhibition match against a man? Andy Murray, for example?

After Williams beat 100th-ranked qualifier Caroline Garcia of France 6-3, 6-2 to reach the third round at the All England Club, the first question at her news conference Thursday concerned a suggestion by Murray ? prompted by a fan's Twitter post ? that the pair of reigning Olympic and U.S. Open champions play each other.

"Really? He wants to play me? Is he sure?" Williams responded, laughing heartily. "That would be fun. I doubt I'd win a point, but that would be fun."

It might draw some attention, too, given the combined star power of Williams in the U.S. and Murray in Britain. Currently, she is No. 1 in the WTA rankings; he's No. 2 in the ATP rankings.

"He's probably one of the top three people I definitely don't want to play," Williams said. "But maybe we can have a little bit of a showdown. That would be fine. I get (to use the doubles) alleys. He gets no serves. I get alleys on my serves, too."

In a piece posted on www.bbc.co.uk on Thursday morning, Murray refers to the original tweet in which someone mentioned he should face Williams.

"I'd be up for it, why not?" Murray said. "I've never hit with her but she's an incredible player and people would be interested to see the men play against the women to see how the styles match up."

On Friday, Murray will stick to trying to become the first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry, 77 years ago. Murray was scheduled to face 32nd-seeded Tommy Robredo of Spain on Centre Court, where the roof might be closed if the forecast for rain is accurate.

The only other British singles player still in the tournament, 19-year-old Laura Robson, was also supposed to be in the main stadium, playing Mariana Duque-Marino of Colombia in a match postponed Thursday because of the first drizzle of Week 1.

Others slated to play Friday, weather permitting, included French Open runner-up David Ferrer, 2011 Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, and 17th-seeded Sloane Stephens of the United States.

While Williams, Stephens and others keep the Stars and Stripes flying in the women's draw, it's a different story in the men's singles, where for the first time in 101 years, zero men from the United States reached Wimbledon's third round. And the last time it happened, way back in 1912, no Americans even entered the oldest Grand Slam tournament.

It's a low moment for a country that produced Bill Tilden and Don Budge, John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.

By the end of Thursday, all 11 U.S. men in the 2013 field at the All England Club were gone, with top-seeded Novak Djokovic accounting for the last one by beating 156th-ranked qualifier Bobby Reynolds 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-1. Earlier in the day, former top-five player James Blake lost to Bernard Tomic of Australia 6-3, 6-4, 7-5, while qualifier Denis Kudla was beaten by Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-1, 7-6 (4), 7-5.

That trio joined 18th-seeded John Isner, 21st-seeded Sam Querrey, Ryan Harrison, Steve Johnson, Alex Kuznetsov, Wayne Odesnik, Rajeev Ram and Michael Russell on the way home.

"It's a tough stat to hear, but I still believe, right now, where U.S. tennis is, not too many guys are in their prime," said Kudla. "That's why the numbers are like that. A lot of guys are in the tail end of their careers and a lot of guys are coming up. "Maybe next year, or the year after that, things could change. You have to go through a little bit of a struggle to get some success."

With 27 of 32 third-round spots in men's singles settled, 18 countries were represented, including Latvia, Ukraine, Croatia and South Africa. Five countries had multiple entrants left, led by four each for Spain and France.

Historic Immigration Overhaul Clears Senate, but a Hostile House Awaits

The Senate approved a measure Thursday to make the most dramatic changes to immigration law in 25 years. It would give a path to citizenship to some 11 million undocumented immigrants, dramatically boost border security, and create a new work visa program for future immigrants. ?The measure passed with a bipartisan vote of 68-32, though a narrow majority of Senate Republicans opposed the legislation.

RELATED: Opponents to Immigration Reform Are Running Out of Options

But the legislation faces an uncertain outcome in the House, where Republicans view the bill with outright hostility.?

RELATED: Obama's Agenda Was Only Mostly Dead

"I consider this an astounding success. An astounding success. You could ratify a treaty or override a veto. This is as good as it gets in the Senate," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., one of the members of the "Gang of Eight" Republicans and Democrats that crafted the legislation.

MORE FROM NATIONAL JOURNAL

"I thought we could probably get a majority at the beginning. I certainly didn't think we could get 68 votes. That's pretty impressive," said Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., another leading Republican supporter.

RELATED: Debating Birthright Citizenship

The Senate's final vote, with 14 Republicans joining all Democrats, was the result of dozens of lawmakers accepting things that they would normally reject for the sake of passing a comprehensive bill. Democrats still fret that the bill's massive influx of troops and drones on the border, requested by Republicans, will create militarized zones and hurt local communities. Republicans fear that the path to citizenship, requested by Democrats, will encourage more illegal immigration in the future.?

RELATED: Best Tweets: Radioactive Arizona Edition

In that sense, the bill's passage also marks a rare example where lawmakers compromised on a tough issue at a time when the political differences of both parties are so stark.

The moment isn't lost on the GOP-controlled House, where Republicans are deeply divided on whether to give undocumented immigrants any type of legal status. At least half of them are solid 'no' votes on anything approaching the Senate proposal. Many think illegal immigrants should not become citizens under the procedures set forth in the Senate bill. The House members are working their way through a series of smaller measures that they hope can compete with the Senate bill.

House Republicans are unmoved by the sense of urgency projected by immigration reform advocates. "The bottom line is it's been since 1986 that there was legislation related to immigration reform. I don't know what a couple more months is going to hurt," said Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., who chairs the House Judiciary Committee's Immigration Subcommittee.

Gowdy is friends with Senate "gang" member Lindsey Graham, who hails from his home state, but he says he disagrees with Graham's approach to immigration. Graham acknowledges that South Carolina has its share of "self-deportation, put 'em in jail folks? I've lost those people. They're there, but I lost them a long time ago," he said.

Graham's advice to the House? "Take up immigration on your own timetable and the way you would like to see it happen. Just address the issue. If you don't like our bill, do one of your own."

That's exactly what the House is doing. House Speaker John Boehner on Thursday reiterated publicly the private vow he made to House Republicans a day earlier, that no immigration bill will pass without a majority of them signing off. "For any legislation ? including a conference report ? to pass the House, it's going to have to be a bill that has the support of a majority of our members," he said.

Immigration reform advocates are preparing to blame the House Republicans for blocking the Senate's legislation if they fail to pass an immigration bill that would allow a House-Senate conference committee. If the House doesn't pass legislation, activists will likely turn their attention to the administration next year, asking for more deferrals of deportation along the lines of last year's deferred action program for "Dreamers," unauthorized youth who were brought to the country as kids.

"The irony is that if House Republicans block immigration reform, in hopes of thwarting Obama and getting a bill more to their liking in the future, they will give Obama a chance to go down in history as the great emancipator of Latino immigrants," said America's Voice Executive Director Frank Sharry. "A future Democratic Congress and President will be able to pass reform with a path to citizenship without giving nearly as much as they're prepared to give this year."

But senators see this year's immigration debate as a welcome return to some semblance of ordinary legislating. It comes before lawmakers are preparing for an ugly debt ceiling fight in the fall.

"It has been a step in the right direction with eight senators putting the bill forward. The committee markup was robust," said Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La. She wasn't involved in writing the bill but became a key figure on the Senate floor when she briefly halted debate and angrily confronted Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., about why she couldn't get her amendments into the vote queue.

Landrieu said that final passage of the immigration bill shows that major legislation can indeed sprout through the muck of partisan squabbles. "I'm trying to be one of those green shoots," she said a few hours before the Senate's vote. "It has not been a model of bipartisanship on the floor," she added, noting that the debate was overly focused on amendments from opponents. "In the old days, four years ago, [noncontroversial amendments] would have been possible."

Even so, basic cordiality among senators was on display throughout the process. Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who voted against the bill, congratulated Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., on the Senate floor for the fair and transparent way he shepherded the bill through his committee.

The "Gang of Eight" made sure from the beginning that no single member emerged as the de facto "leader" that could scare away members of the opposite party. That's no small feat when several gang members?Sens. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., Marco Rubio, R-Fla., and John McCain, R-Ariz.?are prominent media personalities.

"Boy, will I be glad when I don't have to talk to this guy," joked Graham as he was flagged down in a Capitol hallway by Schumer the morning of the final vote.

New Aussie PM hopes for 'kinder, gentler' politics

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) ? Kevin Rudd has wrenched back the job of Australian prime minister from the woman who had maneuvered him out three years ago, possibly just in time to soften a crushing defeat that his party likely faces in upcoming elections.

He was sworn in Thursday and urged fellow lawmakers to be "a little kinder and gentler" toward each other following the internal coup that ousted Julia Gillard, the country's first woman prime minister.

Rudd, a Mandarin-speaking former diplomat, forced Gillard out Wednesday in nearly the same way she ousted him in 2010. Each faced a party leadership vote in the face of a revolt from Labor Party lawmakers, but while Rudd did not contest Gillard's earlier challenge, she went ahead with a vote that she lost 57-45.

Gillard tendered her resignation Wednesday night.

In a brief statement to Parliament two hours after he was sworn in as national leader, Rudd praised Gillard's "major reforms" on issues such as industrial law and school literacy testing, as well "her great work as a standard bearer for women."

Rudd's ouster had created a rift in the Labor Party and endless infighting. He had tried twice previously to oust Gillard, last year and in February. Many took the fact that he never posed for a Parliament House portrait, as other former prime ministers had done, as a sign that he never gave up on returning.

"As we all know in this place, political life is a very hard life; a very hard life indeed," Rudd told Parliament.

"Let us try ? just try ? to be a little kinder and gentler with each other in the further deliberations of this Parliament," he added.

Markets reacted calmly to the change in leadership, which is not expected to affect Australia's economy or its strong dollar. Amid global financial instability and after years of growth fueled largely by a mining boom, the nation's economy has cooled.

Rudd's way back to leadership was paved with the Labor Party's dismal opinion polling under Gillard, ahead of elections she had set for Sept. 14 but that Rudd could schedule as early as Aug. 3. Australians favor Rudd over Gillard, and while the conservative opposition is still favored to win the next election, Rudd's leadership could help avoid a landslide defeat.

Rudd had warned that Labor was facing its worst election defeat under Gillard's leadership in the 111-year history of the Australian federation.

Gillard lacked Rudd's charisma, and although many Labor lawmakers preferred her style, her deepening unpopularity among voters compelled a majority to seek a change.

Opposition leader Tony Abbott demanded an explanation from Rudd of why Gillard was deposed with elections looming. Abbott also called for an election date to be confirmed.

"Politics is a tough business and sometimes it is far more brutal than it needs to be," Abbott said.

"This is a fraught moment in the life of our nation. A prime minister has been dragged down; her replacement owes the Australian people and the Australian Parliament an explanation," he added.

Rudd's office could not immediately confirm whether Rudd would replace Gillard in a visit to Indonesia that had been scheduled for next week.

Governor-General Quentin Bryce commissioned Rudd as prime minister on Thursday, what is likely to be Parliament's last day before elections.

Anthony Albanese was sworn in as deputy prime minister and Chris Bowen was sworn in as treasurer during the same ceremony. Rudd has yet to say when he will announce his complete Cabinet after seven ministers resigned following Gillard's ouster.

Rudd faces a potential no-confidence vote in Parliament. He probably would survive it, but a loss could trigger an election as early as Aug. 3.

Bryce revealed that she took late-night legal advice on whether she should swear in Rudd. A minority government such as Gillard led has not been seen in Australian federal politics since World War II, and Labor's leadership change raised unique constitutional questions.

While Rudd has the support of his party, Labor has just 71 seats in the 150-seat House of Representatives. Gillard was able to govern with support from some independents and the minor Greens party. They are not obligated to support Rudd, though he did get the backing of at least two independent lawmakers who had not supported Gillard.

Rudd's statement fulfilled a condition set by Bryce that he quickly notify Parliament of his appointment so that lawmakers had an opportunity to take action.

Gillard said after her loss Wednesday that she was proud of her government's achievements, including the introduction of an unpopular carbon tax paid by the biggest industrial polluters. She had been dogged by her pre-election promise never to introduce such a tax.

Gillard's gender was a focus several times during her tenure, and she made international headlines for calling Abbott a misogynist.

She said Wednesday that because of her tenure, "It will be easier for the next woman and the woman after that and the woman after that. And I'm proud of that."

According to AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega, the carrier has now burned through its First inventory. ?We sold a bunch more when we lowered the price,? de la Vega told CNET. ?We sold everything we had on that.?
