KC Rep find the gritty humor in David Mamet's 'American Buffalo ...

The early plays of David Mamet are never classified as comedies, but the fine Kansas City Repertory Theatre production of ?American Buffalo? poses an obvious question: Why not?

It could be that Mamet himself projects such a humorless public persona in interviews and his personal essays that ?funny? is a word we resist attaching to a man who discusses his plays as intellectual exercises. Although we still encounter flashes of the poetically profane old Mamet (he was certainly present in ?Phil Spector,? the recent HBO film he wrote and directed), he has through the years seemed drawn to the elevated language of by-gone eras in such as plays as ?Boston Marriage,? his adaptation of the Edwardian drama ?The Voysey Inheritance? or his film version of British playwright Terence Rattigan?s ?The Winslow Boy.?

In ?American Buffalo? we encounter ?classic? Mamet. The dialogue in this 1975 play, which established him as a major talent, is raw but precise and the setting is far from anything resembling middle-class respectability.

Set in a ?resale? shop in Chicago, the piece depicts the bumbling efforts of a trio of sub-cultural bottom-feeders to pull off a rare-coins heist ? a crime for which they are woefully unprepared. The crusty shop owner, Don, has enlisted the help of Bobby, a slow-thinking young junkie who may or may not be clean. But when the bombastic Teach, a neighborhood character with no obvious means of supporting himself, learns of the plan, he convinces Don that Bobby is too inexperienced and untrustworthy to pull off the job. Only he, Teach, can grab the coins without breaking a sweat.

As the plan emerges, we realize that Teach is a big talker who doesn't really possess the requisite criminal skills he claims to have. But he plants enough doubt in Don's mind that the older man comes to distrust Bobby. There's a flash of violence as the little scheme comes unraveled and ultimately we're led to believe that talking big and indulging in grandiose fantasies is really what connects these guys. It's a sort of a mutual delusion society.

In the final minutes of the play, it all comes down to one question Teach repeats to Don: ?Are you mad at me? Are you mad at me?? And there you have it. These guys talk tough but are as emotionally vulnerable as little kids.

?American Buffalo? is generally considered a scathing commentary on market capitalism as these would-be thieves make plans in a shop filled to the rafters with the detritus of American consumerism. That view of the play is totally legitimate, but director Jerry Genochio and his splendid cast see the piece as something beyond that: A comedy of manners. The story of these aspiring master criminals is a near-farcical portrait of little men who want to think big.

As written, Teach becomes the dominant character in the piece. He's a guy who throws his emotional weight around but whose efforts to manipulate others usually comes to nothing. Brian Paulette offers a spectacular performance in this iconic role. Costumed in a leather jacket and florid shirt, with slicked-back hair and a drooping mustache, he visually brings to mind Dustin Hoffman's career criminal in ?Straight Time.? His handling of Mamet's staccato dialogue and profane arias is a thing of beauty. Ultimately Paulette allows us to see beyond the bombast to the inner life of a character who thinks and acts like an addict, even if Bobby is the ?real? junkie.

As Don, Robert Elliott strikes just the right balance as a guy who has cast himself as a paternal figure to young Bobby ? which makes his distrust of the kid all the more disturbing when Teach convinces him that Bobby is a turncoat. Teach and Don have something in common ? an ability to consider superficial evidence and come to the wrong conclusion.

Elliott and Paulette deliver operatic performances. Their characters express themselves in high-relief terms, using words like weapons and reacting to events with extreme emotions. Robbie Tann finds a different vocabulary as Bobby and delivers an utterly convincing human-scale performance as a kid who's the walking personification of vulnerability. Genochio has the skill to put these performances together into a coherent whole. One thing the actors share is immaculate timing. They guide us through the deceptively complex narrative with impressive clarity.

Anyone who saw the 1995 film of ?American Buffalo? knows just how deadly and humorless Mamet can be in the wrong hands. Here he's in very good hands. The result is an impressive portrait of humanity at the bottom of the social scale. It?s funny, sad, poignant and a little scary.

Helping Genochio and his actors to achieve something so raw and yet sublime is a superior design team. Patrick Holt (costumes), Jason Lyons (lighting) and Joe Cerqua (sound and music) all make vital contributions. Scenic designer Donald Eastman deserves special notice because his junk shop is so beautifully cluttered and so spatially dynamic that it virtually becomes a character.

Smartphones out-ship feature phones for the first time, iPhone reaches Q1 high

Smartphones outshipped feature phones for the first time in Q1 2013, with the iPhone reaching a new first-quarter personal high for shipments. Apple had the second-highest number of smartphones shipped, coming in behind Samsung. IDC noted that the iPhone did experience a slowdown in growth compared to the same quarter last year.

Apple's smartphone shipment volume hit a new first-quarter high thanks in part to the iPhone 5, with volume growing 6.6% year over year. However, the last time the iPhone maker posted a single-digit year-over-year growth rate was 3Q09. The iPhone maker has held the second spot in the smartphone rankings for the past five quarters. Apple's mix of models shipped to market is increasingly diversified as it tries to reach new buyers.

Samsung, of course, sells many different models of phones, while Apple only sells three, and Samsung doesn?t sell every phone in every country. Apple may have the lead in the United States, but Samsung continues to fulfill a demand in countries where the iPhone has no presence or is more expensive than anything Samsung offers. Apple may be looking to compete in these countries with the rumored low-cost iPhone, bringing a more affordable device to places where phone subsidies are either uncommon or non-existent, and threatening Samsung?s position as the world leader in smartphones.

New drug stimulates immune system to kill infected cells in animal model of hepatitis B infection

Apr. 26, 2013 ? A novel drug developed by Gilead Sciences and tested in an animal model at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio suppresses hepatitis B virus infection by stimulating the immune system and inducing loss of infected cells.

In a study conducted at Texas Biomed's Southwest National Primate Research Center, researchers found that the immune modulator GS-9620, which targets a receptor on immune cells, reduced both the virus levels and the number of infected liver cells in chimpanzees chronically infected with hepatitis B virus (HBV). Chimpanzees are the only species other than humans that can be infected by HBV. Therefore, the results from this study were critical in moving the drug forward to human clinical trials which are now in progress.

The new report, co-authored by scientists from Texas Biomed and Gilead Sciences, appears in the May issue of Gastroenterology. Gilead researchers had previously demonstrated that the same therapy could induce a cure of hepatitis infection in woodchucks that were chronically infected with a virus similar to human HBV.

"This is an important proof-of-concept study demonstrating that the therapy stimulates the immune system to suppress the virus and eliminate infected liver cells," said co-author Robert E. Lanford, Ph.D., of Texas Biomed. "One of the key observations was that the therapy continued to suppress virus levels for months after therapy was stopped.

The current therapy for HBV infection targets the virus and works very well at suppressing viral replication and delaying progression of liver disease, but it is a lifelong therapy that does not provide a cure.

"This GS-9620 therapy represents the first conceptually new treatment for HBV in more than a decade, and combining it with the existing antiviral therapy could be transformative in dealing with this disease," stated Lanford.

The Gilead drug binds a receptor called Toll-Like Receptor 7 that is present in immune cells. The receptor normally recognizes invading viruses and triggers the immune system to suppress viral replication by the innate immune response and kill infected cells by the adaptive immune response, thus orchestrating both arms of the immune system.

HBV damages the liver, leading to cirrhosis and liver cancer. Liver cancer is the fifth most common cancer worldwide and the third most common cause of cancer death. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), up to 1.4 million Americans are chronically infected with HBV.

The World Health Organization estimates that two billion people have been infected with the hepatitis B virus, resulting in more than 240 million people with chronic infections and 620,000 deaths every year.

Mass. mosque: Bomb suspect had 2 recent outbursts

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (AP) ? When preachers told congregants at a mosque in November that it was appropriate for Muslims to celebrate U.S. holidays such as the Fourth of July and Thanksgiving, a man who would later be a suspect in last week's the Boston Marathon bombing stood up to argue, the mosque said.

The Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center on Monday told about that outburst by Tamerlan Tsarnaev and provided more details on a second one two months later that the group had previously described.

The group said in its statement that Tsarnaev, who was pronounced dead on Friday after a shootout with police, was not a member of its Cambridge mosque but sometimes attended Friday services and daily prayers over the last year or so. His younger brother, Dzhokhar, who was captured Friday and charged Monday with conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction, showed up sometimes for prayers, the group said.

Two U.S. officials told The Associated Press on Monday that the brothers were motivated by religion but appear not to be tied to any Islamic terrorist groups. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Both mosque incidents happened after the older brother returned from a months-long trip to Russia last year. An aunt there said he was studying Islam but struggled to fit in.

The troublesome behavior first came in November, just before Thanksgiving, the mosque said. At a weekly prayer, a preacher gave a sermon saying it was appropriate for Muslims to celebrate American holidays. Tamerlan Tsarnaev stood up and argued that "celebration of any holiday was not allowed in the faith."

The preacher met with Tsarnaev and discussed the issue after the service.

In January, the mosque said Tsarnaev had a similar outburst.

This time, the sermon included praise for Martin Luther King Jr., and this time Tsarnaev shouted, calling the preacher a "non-believer" and "hypocrite" who was "contaminating people's minds." Congregants shouted back at him, telling him to leave, and he did.

Later, volunteer leaders of the mosque met with him and told him that he would not be welcome at service if he interrupted again. The group said he continued attending sometimes and did not cause any more problems.

Hospitalized suspect in Boston bombings awaits charges under guard

By Svea Herbst-Bayliss and Ben Berkowitz

BOSTON (Reuters) - Federal prosecutors prepared criminal charges on Sunday against an ethnic Chechen college student suspected in the deadly Boston Marathon bombings as he lay severely wounded, unable to speak and hospitalized under heavy guard two days after his dramatic capture.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, whose tongue was injured in a gunshot to the throat before his arrest, was initially under sedation and incapable of being interviewed by investigators, authorities said. He also had been shot in the leg.

But the ABC and NBC news networks reported late on Sunday that Tsarnaev had regained consciousness and was responding in writing to questions put to him by authorities, who are seeking to determine if the suspects they have identified acted alone.

Much of investigators' attention has focused on a trip to Russia last year by his older brother and fellow suspect, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who is now dead, and whether Chechen separatists or Islamist extremists may have influenced or assisted the siblings.

The two brothers emigrated to the United States a decade ago from Dagestan, a predominantly Muslim region in Russia's North Caucasus mountains.

They are accused of planting and setting off two homemade bombs near the crowded finish line of the Boston Marathon last Monday, killing three people and injuring more than 170 others.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, died after a gunfight three nights later with police on the streets of Watertown, the Boston suburb where authorities finally cornered his younger brother, ending a massive manhunt that shut down much of greater Boston on Friday.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, a naturalized U.S. citizen, was found spattered with blood and hiding inside a covered boat parked in a Watertown back yard on Friday evening.

He apparently was hit by gunfire in the shootout that left his brother dead the day before, but it was not clear whether he suffered additional wounds in a final hail of bullets that preceded his capture.

Tsarnaev was shot in the throat, U.S. Senator Dan Coats, a member of the Intelligence Committee, told ABC. A source close to the investigation told Reuters he had damage to his tongue.

INTENSIVE CARE UNDER ARMED GUARD

The suspect was placed under armed guard in the intensive care unit of Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where his brother was pronounced dead early on Friday.

U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz, the federal prosecutor for the Boston area, was preparing criminal charges, according to Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis. It was not clear when charges would be filed. Prosecutors did not plan any news conference or announcements on Sunday.

Whether prosecutors ultimately decide to seek the death penalty if Tsarnaev were convicted hinges on various factors, such as his age, his apparent lack of a prior criminal history and whether he might have information leading to other suspects, legal experts say.

Photographs of the two brothers, allegedly in the act of planting bombs at the Boston Marathon, were circulated by the FBI on Thursday, with an appeal to the public for help in locating the then-unidentified pair.

The suspects surfaced late that night when they allegedly shot a campus police officer to death at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, then hijacked a sport utility vehicle before opening fire and hurling explosives at pursuing law enforcement.

During this confrontation, according to police, a transit cop was badly injured and the older Tsarnaev, walking toward officers and firing until he ran out of ammunition, was tackled by a police sergeant, only to be struck by the SUV as his brother sped away.

The younger Tsarnaev later abandoned the vehicle and vanished, leading authorities to impose a lockdown on the city of Boston and its suburbs before he was found and arrested in Watertown some 20 hours later.

Students returning to campus on Sunday at the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was enrolled, recalled seeing him back in the dorm, at class and even working out in the gym a day or two after the bombings before realizing he was suspected in the crime.

Boston's police commissioner said investigators discovered at least four unexploded devices, including one similar to the two pressure cooker bombs detonated at the Boston Marathon.

"I personally believe they were (planning other attacks)," he said Sunday on CBS television's "Face the Nation."

Later on CNN, Davis said he was "confident" the two brothers "were the two major actors in the violence that occurred."

The men's parents, who moved back to southern Russia, have said their sons were framed.

Runners in the London Marathon observed 30 seconds of silence before starting their race on Sunday, while people from the greater Boston area remembered the victims in church services.

"We must be people of reconciliation and not revenge," Roman Catholic Cardinal Sean O'Malley told a packed Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. "The crimes of the two young men must not be justification for violence against Muslims."

In the neighboring city of Cambridge, police stationed themselves across from a home where various members of the Tsarnaev family had lived, advising bystanders to move on.

Patricia McMillan, who lives two doors down, said she last saw Tamerlan Tsarnaev in the neighborhood the Wednesday before the bombing, noting he had shaved off his beard and that he was smoking.

TRIP TO RUSSIA

Tamerlan Tsarnaev traveled to Moscow in January 2012 and spent six months in the region, a law enforcement source said.

That trip, combined with Russian interest in Tamerlan communicated to U.S. authorities and an FBI interview of him in 2011, have raised questions whether danger signals were missed.

It was unclear if he could have had contact with militant Islamist groups in southern Russia's restive Caucasus region.

A group leading an Islamist insurgency against Russia said on Sunday it was not at war with the United States, distancing itself from the Boston bombings.

"We are fighting with Russia, which is responsible not only for the occupation of the Caucasus but for monstrous crimes against Muslims," said a statement from Caucasus Emirate militants operating in Dagestan.

The insurgency is rooted in two separatist wars that Russian troops waged against Chechen separatists following the fall of the Soviet Union.

The brothers spent their early years in a small community of Chechens in the central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, a mainly Muslim nation of 5.5 million. They moved in 2001 to Dagestan, a southern Russian province where their parents now live.

Neighbors said they noticed nothing unusual about Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who this summer helped his father renovate his first floor apartment in Makhachkala, a bustling city in Dagestan.

"They say he was a fanatic. I didn't see that," said Madina Abdulayeva, 45, who runs a small grocery shop across the pot-holed street where he used to come to chat. "We're all Muslim here. We're all part of Islam. We all pray.

Farmers say Egypt's wheat crop hopes are "a dream"

By Yasmine Saleh

MINYA, Egypt (Reuters) - Egypt's Islamist-led government must be dreaming if it expects a bumper wheat harvest over the next six weeks that will save the country billions of dollars in imports, says farmer Farid Boshra Abdel Malek.

"How can they expect any increase in wheat production when they are not providing us with water, fuel for our machines or much-needed enrichment seeds?" said the wheat grower in Matay village, near the city of Minya in the lush but slender Nile valley that is this desert nation's granary.

"They are giving us nothing and expecting more."

Farmers say Cairo is over-optimistic in expecting a significant increase in this year's crop as their long-standing complaints about bad fertilizer, shortage of irrigation water and of plant-enhancement seeds remain unresolved.

New worries about a shortage of diesel fuel to power pumps, tractors and trucks to bring in the harvest and transport it have added to the uncertainty.

"Only God knows how much we will harvest this season, given the problems, but we are doing our best," farmer Hana Munir said.

Egypt, the world's top wheat importer, aims to cut imports this year by around 10 percent, hoping a bigger home crop and modified storage will help the most populous Arab state keep its 84 million people in low-cost subsidized bread.

The country has endured political and economic turmoil since the overthrow of autocratic President Hosni Mubarak in 2011. Foreign reserves have fallen from $30 billion to $13.4 billion - less than three months' imports - raising doubts about the state's ability to import basic foodstuffs such as wheat.

Egypt usually imports about 10 million tonnes a year, which might cost it just over $3 billion. But this year the state says it will buy only around 4-5 million tonnes abroad, hoping to get the rest from local production.

"For the government to expect 4 to 5 million tonnes of local wheat for bread is a dream, a nice dream but nothing more than that," said Abdel Malek, who owns a 13 feddan (5.5 hectare) farm in one of Egypt's biggest wheat-producing regions.

A bread shortage in 2008 and similar problems in the 1970s provoked riots at a time when protests were not as routine as in post-revolutionary Egypt, where any lack of bread is likely to trigger violence, if not another uprising. Small protests have already begun in some villages in Minya over bread shortages.

"OVERESTIMATIONS"

Minister of Supply Bassem Ouda told Reuters this month that bread is the top priority for his administration since he took office in a cabinet reshuffle earlier this year.

"The old regime's policy was never in favor of Egypt or our local wheat crop, and it treated farmers badly as it used to humiliate any Egyptian, but that era has ended," said Ouda, who is from the Muslim Brotherhood movement, which supports President Mohamed Mursi.

He forecast a 9.5 million tonne domestic wheat harvest, of which about half ends up in government flour mills. Egypt would sign import deals, if needed, only with countries that "fit our plans, time schedule and give us the best offers and credit facilities", Ouda added.

A ministry official who asked not to be named said Egypt would always need to import wheat. Local production could be increased if the government improved soil and fertilizers and worked harder to solve farmers' problems, but that would take years, he said.

The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture report on Egypt forecast production will increase 2.3 percent to 8.7 million tonnes this year due to an expanded area under cultivation. But it said diesel fuel shortages could disrupt the harvest.

"The trade and other knowledgeable interlocutors estimate Egyptian wheat production at about 6-7 million tonnes," it said.

"The government is forecasting wheat procurement (from local farmers) at 4 to 5 million tonnes, but this appears unrealistic.

"The government is setting import procurement and wheat stock policies based on (significant) local crop production overestimations."

It forecast that Egyptian wheat imports would have to rise to 8.5 million tonnes in the fiscal year beginning in July from 8 million tonnes in the current year, which was sharply down from 11.65 million tonnes in 2011/12.

USDA said wheat stocks are likely to plunge below 1 million tonnes by June 30 because the economic crisis has crippled purchases from the world market. The government has held off imports to save hard currency and says it still has 2 million tonnes in reserve, enough to last 81 days. The United States is one of Egypt's main suppliers, along with Russia and France.

ENHANCED FIELDS

Aiming to harvest 1.4 million hectares from April 15 to May 20, the government is pioneering a technique that smoothes fields so farmers can plant more wheat on the same area.

It announced plans last month to build 150 silos before the 2014 wheat harvest and said in February it would raise the price it pays for local wheat to 400 Egyptian pounds ($58.30) per ardeb (150 kg) up from 380 pounds. Many existing silos are outdated and contribute to loss of grain.

"We have over 2,000 fields to demonstrate a new style of planting that saves up to 25 percent of soil-enhancement seeds and water and has already been implemented in Sharqia," said Salah Moawed, a senior agriculture ministry official.

As a result, the Nile delta region of Sharqia, one of the biggest wheat growing areas, is expected to nearly double the amount it harvests to 1.4 million tonnes this year, according to deputy minister of agriculture there Mohy el-Din Mahmoud.

According to Moawed, Egypt grows 9 to 9.5 million tonnes of wheat a year but more than half never reaches the market.

"We waste a lot of our production due to the lack of proper storage as we only have silos to store up to 5 million tonnes, besides losses during harvesting and transport," he said.

Farmers keep back some wheat to make their own bread, to feed livestock and for seeding in the next season.

"We are not putting any pressure on the farmer to plant wheat, but we are giving him incentives and solving his problems to make him want to do so," Moawed said.

But Minya farmer Mohamed Hussein said: "We don't feel there is a government that cares about farmers. We never protest, we don't do anything except work and eat. Yet no one ever looked at us or took our problems seriously."

FARMERS' PROBLEMS

Matay farmers gather daily to talk over their problems and ease stress during a mid-day break before they go back to work.

According to Abdel Malek, farmers complain of a decrease in the Nile water coming from Ethiopia and the government's failure to provide them with enough subsidized seeds and fertilizer.

"Subsidized fertilizer costs 75 Egyptian pounds a 50-kg bag, while we pay 150 pounds for the same amount on the black market to meet our needs," farmer Gerges Ayad said.

Urban sprawl is also eating into available farming land.

"A lot of good agricultural land has been used for housing as the government does not have money to build multi-floor houses and only builds one or two-floor homes, so it has to build more to cope with the increasing population, which is eating up our land," farmer Abdel Malek said.

Egypt's economic crisis has also hit fuel supplies hard.

On two visits to Minya this month and in late March, only one in five filling stations had the low-grade diesel fuel that farmers use, and there were long queues of trucks and buses.

But Moawed said the ministry of petroleum had been briefed to make sure farms received enough fuel in harvest time.

Polio vaccine developer Koprowski dies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Dr. Hilary Koprowski, a pioneering virologist who developed the first successful oral vaccination for polio, died this week at his suburban Philadelphia home. He was 96.

Although not as well-known as fellow researchers Jonas Salk and Albert Sabin, Koprowski in 1950 became the first to show it was possible to vaccinate against polio, the crippling and sometimes fatal disease that's now all but eradicated.

Koprowski's son, Christopher, said Saturday his father liked the scientific recognition his work received without the celebrity of Salk and Sabin.

"He enjoyed not having his scientific work disrupted," said Christopher Koprowski, chief of radiation oncology at Christiana Care Health System in Wilmington, Del. "Not that he was a modest individual, mind you."

Christopher Koprowski said his father had been sick for several months before dying Thursday in the same Wynnewood home he'd lived in since 1957.

Hilary Koprowski self-administered the live-virus oral vaccine he developed before the 1950 clinical trial ? about two years before Salk's injectable version using a dead form of the virus began testing with the backing of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis, now the March of Dimes.

Sabin, who Koprowski's son said sometimes collaborated with his father, was the first to get the more-effective oral version, which didn't require boosters, licensed for use in the U.S.

Koprowski went on to be the director of The Wistar Institute in Philadelphia from 1957 to 1991. Under his leadership, the independent research institution developed a rubella vaccine that helped eradicate the disease in much of the world, Wistar officials said. It was during that time the institute also developed a more effective rabies vaccine.

A talented musician, the Polish-born Koprowski was a penniless immigrant in Rio de Janeiro making money teaching piano before hooking up with a lab there and eventually moving to the United States, his son said.

"He was a great dad. He was colorful, charismatic," Christopher Koprowski said. "He's still the most brilliant person I've ever met."

Vegetarian Book Reviews: Veggistan & The Vegetarian Pantry

Veggiestan

I?m really not sure when Sally Butcher found the time to write this follow up to Persia in Peckham ? between three blogs, an active twitter and facebook presence and running a shop, she has also somehow found the time to write two cookbooks. It makes one feel positively exhausted and/or completely inadequate.

Veggiestan is a big book ? 263 pages ? with ten chapters of vegetarian recipes: bread and pastry; herbs and salads; dairy and eggs; soup; legumes and pulses; vegetables; cooking with fruit; saucing, pickling and preserving; and desserts, and when flicking through pretty much everything looks like an interesting dish worth trying. For example, Palestinian upside-down rice, the swooning imam, smoky aubergine dip, baked stuffed quinces, to name four, but really pulling out ones that look particularly interesting is supremely difficult. Basically, they all look good!

Recipes aren?t confined to one part of the Middle East: as Sally says in her introduction, Veggiestan isn?t a real place, and the food is an amalgam from across the region. While there are plenty of photos, not every dish is accompanied by a picture. And the traumas of deciding which recipes to leave in and which to leave out have been alleviated by the Veggiestan blog, which has plenty of further recipes to try.

This is a really enticing book: beautifully written, and the flavour combinations and dishes look both delicious and out of the norm for us. It?s found a rare place on our bookshelf: I?m sure it will be a book that we reference frequently.

The Vegetarian Pantry by Chloe Coker and Jane Montgomery

Vegetarian Pantry Cover

A second vegetarian book recently received is The Vegetarian Pantry, by Chloe Coker and Jane Montgomery,an ideal book for those who are looking to expand their repetori of vegetable dishes. I particularly like the look of potato and celeriac rosti with spinach and mushrooms and a poached egg, french toast stuffed with bananas, breadcrumbed halloumi goujons, winter salad of pearl barley, mushrooms and walnuts, carrot and leek tarte tatin, homemade baked beans, and rhubarb, orange and vanilla fool with shortbread cookies.

Like most books from the Ryland Peter?s stable it is beautifully put together and photographed and is very visual.? However, it must be said that the recipes are good, but not ground-breakingly innovative. For many vegetarians, or those who have long championed vegetable variety in their food, this book is probably insufficiently novel. However, for those who are starting to increase their variety, or setting up their own vegetarian kitchen for the first time it?s worth picking up.

Close vote seen on background checks on gun buyers

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A bipartisan Senate proposal to expand background checks for gun buyers gained the backing of one Republican and the potential support of a second Sunday as sponsors said the vote expected this week was too close to call.

The plan would "strengthen the background check system without in any way infringing on Second Amendment rights," Maine Sen. Susan Collins said in a statement explaining her support for the measure. But she added that "it is impossible to predict at this point" what will be in a final bill.

Arizona Sen. John McCain, who has a B+ rating from the National Rifle Association, said he was "very favorably disposed" to the proposal that has emerged from Sens. Patrick Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.

"I appreciate their work," McCain said. "And the American people want to do what we can to prevent these tragedies. And there's a lot more that needs to be done, particularly in the area of mental health."

It was in McCain's home state that a gunman with schizophrenia shot then-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in the head during a 2011 rampage in Tucson that left six people killed.

Collins and Sen. Mark Kirk of Illinois are the only two Republicans besides Toomey who are expected to vote for the compromise as of now.

It will take 60 votes to pass, meaning that more Republicans will have to come on board because some Democrats from gun-friendly states are expected to oppose the measure.

"It's an open question as to whether or not we have the votes. I think it's going to be close," Toomey said.

The measure requires background checks for people buying guns at gun shows and online. Background checks currently apply only to transactions handled by the country's 55,000 licensed gun dealers. Private transactions, such as a sale of a gun between family members, would still be exempt.

Manchin urged lawmakers to read the 49-page proposal. He said it should dispel any misconceptions about infringing on the constitutional right to bear arms.

"You can imagine for what, the last two or three months, that all you heard is they're going to take this away from you and that away," and all of the gun groups are trying to outdo each other, Manchin said Sunday on Fox News Channel. "And the bottom line is when you have a group now ? Alan Gottlieb, the chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, said, 'We read the bill, we like the bill' and it protects law-abiding gun owners like myself. And they are supporting it now. That is huge."

Gottlieb did not respond to a request Sunday to provide more details of the position taken by his group.

The senators' agreement actually includes language expanding firearms rights by easing some restrictions on transporting guns across state lines, protecting sellers from lawsuits if buyers passed a check but later used a gun in a crime and letting gun dealers conduct business in states where they don't live.

"If you are a law-abiding gun owner, you're going to like this bill," Manchin said.

He acknowledged the vote would be tight. Asked how many votes he thought he had now, Manchin said: "Well, we're close. We need more."

The compromise, if successful, would be added to broader gun control legislation to strengthen laws against illegal gun trafficking and to increase slightly school security aid.

Other additions to the legislation also are expected to be debated this week, including a measure that would allow concealed hand gun permits issued by one state to be accepted nationwide as a de facto background check.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said in news show interviews that concealed weapons permits should be applied nationally. He also called for more prosecution of people that are trying to buy guns and fail a background check.

The Senate is also expected to consider, and reject, Democratic amendments to ban assault weapons and ammunition magazines carrying more than 10 rounds.

Manchin and Toomey were on CNN's "State of the Union" and CBS' "Face the Nation." McCain was on CNN.

Avnet Technology Solutions Americas Introduces Disaster Recovery ...

Avnet accelerates resellers? mid-market data center and storage sales in the U.S. and Canada by providing a secure, cost-effective way to protect data

Avnet Technology Solutions, the global IT solutions distribution leader and an operating group of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT), today unveiled a new data protection solution for IBM business partners in the U.S. and Canada. The solution enables partners to address the disaster recovery and business continuity challenges of their mid-market customers, while further enhancing their data center and storage offerings. The new offering combines services from Avnet with industry-leading software and hardware from IBM and Brocade. The solution offers unique data replication features that securely and efficiently transport critical business data to remote sites over any distance.

?While companies recognize that disaster recovery and business continuity plans are critical, they can be resource intensive to implement,? said Mark Martin, vice president of business development and marketing, Avnet Technology Solutions, Americas, IBM Solutions group. ?Avnet worked with IBM and Brocade to design a cost-effective, secure solution that helps mid-market enterprises protect their data and information assets. With this solution, our partners will be able to competitively differentiate themselves and drive additional storage sales by offering a solution that addresses their customers? technology and financial issues.?

With this solution, partners will be able to provide their customers with the ability to restart processing in their back-up data centers at the point of disruption. Instead of locating and loading back-up files, a customer?s remote data center can immediately continue transactions from the most current point reached at the primary data center, saving time and improving customer service.

The solution can be customized to meet the unique needs of end customers. The baseline offering includes the IBM Storwize V7000 controller, remote mirroring software, and IBM/Brocade SAN06B routers (which include encryption, data compression and bandwidth management). This technology is enhanced with services from Avnet, including the installation and implementation of the solution and overall project management. The services from Avnet complement partners? services offerings, enabling them to expand their IT services capabilities or obtain additional bench strength when needed.

?Our mid-market customers struggle with disaster recovery and business continuity,? said Chris Mierzwa,?vice president of storage solutions, Sirius Computer Solutions, an IT solutions integrator and Avnet partner. ?They know they need robust technology and solid processes, but high-quality solutions in this space typically come with high prices. Avnet?s new solution is an attractive proposition since it is specifically designed for mid-sized companies without the money and resources to implement what their businesses require. It provides the industry-leading technology at an affordable entry point.?By including services, software and hardware in one integrated solution, it facilitates a successful deployment and further enhances our role as a trusted advisor to our customers.?

NKorea urges foreigners in SKorea to evacuate

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? North Korea is urging all foreign companies and tourists in South Korea to evacuate because it says the rival Koreas are on the eve of a nuclear war.

Analysts see a direct attack on Seoul as extremely unlikely. The warning Tuesday from the North's Korean Asia-Pacific Peace Committee is similar to past threats that analysts call an attempt to raise anxiety in foreign capitals.

Observers say a torrent of North Korean prophesies of doom is partly meant to win Pyongyang-friendly policy changes in Seoul and Washington and to boost the image of leader Kim Jong Un.

Last week, North Korea told foreign diplomats based in Pyongyang that it will not be able to guarantee their safety as of Wednesday.

Arkansas residents seek millions after Exxon crude oil spill

Two Arkansas residents filed a class action lawsuit against Exxon Mobil Friday, demanding to be compensated for damages after a crude oil pipeline ruptured the week before in their subdivision outside Little Rock, Ark.

Kathryn Chunn and Kimla Greene, residents of Ledrick Circle, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court on behalf of themselves and other affected residents and are seeking more than $5 million in damages. According to the 16-page document, which was posted on the Arkansas Times website Friday, homeowners within 3,000 feet of the pipeline were impacted by the spill that occurred in Mayflower, Ark., a suburb 20 miles from Little Rock.

Read the lawsuit (.pdf)

According to the lawsuit, 19,000 barrels were spilled in what the residents are calling the ?worst spill in Arkansas history.? Exxon, however, says the equivalent of 5,000 crude oil barrels were spilled.

The lawsuit says the pipeline?s capacity was increased by 50 percent in 2009 and that the line was not adequately maintained or inspected. The 65-year-old Pegasus pipeline transports crude oil from Canada between Illinois and Texas.

Exxon has not responded to the lawsuit but said in an online statement that it is paying for the cleanup and "will honor all valid claims."

In an online briefing Saturday, the company said the spill mostly affected the yards of six homes. The company says the water supply has not been tainted. Exxon also pointed to air quality reports produced by the Environmental Protection Agency, which show an increase in carbon monoxide in some areas around the spill, but no increases in other emissions.

Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel launched an investigation last week into what caused the spill and the subsequent recovery efforts, and the investigation may be used as evidence for the plaintiffs. An Exxon spokeswoman told Reuters that the company will ?cooperate fully? with any investigation.

Meantime, the 22 residents who were evacuated from their homes have not been able to return. State health authorities are still working on a plan for a safe return.

Mayflower, Ark., Chief of Police Bob Satkowski told Channel 7 News in Little Rock that those residents had to leave their homes because of health risks from the crude oil fumes and possible fires.

ExxonMobil initially downplayed environmental concerns, saying that the air quality didn't likely present a human health risk, ?with the exception of high-pooling areas.?

EPA officials said the cleanup would be long and expensive, according to KARK. Exxon has since said it would pay for the cleanup.

The oil spill came at a bad time for crude oil public relations. Two days before the spill, Reuters reported that a train carrying crude oil derailed in Minnesota and spilled up to 30,000 gallons.

The week before, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration recommended fining Exxon Mobil Pipeline Company $1.7 million for how the company responded to a crude oil pipeline failure in the Yellowstone River in Montana.

The Mayflower, Ark. oil spill was more than 10 times more significant than the Montana spill, which leaked 1,509 barrels.

To put these numbers in perspective: The 1989 Exxon Valdez spill poured 260,000 to 750,000 gallons into Alaskan waters.

The 2010 Deep Water Horizon oil spill, the most significant oil spill in the U.S., leaked 4.9 million barrels into the Gulf Coast.

Green meteorite's age casts doubt on claims that it came from Mercury

? Stefan Ralew / SR Meteorites

This is the largest fragment of meteorite NWA 7325, recovered in Morocco in 2012 and purchased by German meteorite dealer Stefan Ralew. Scientists are debating whether the meteorite came from Mercury.

By Mike Wall
Space.com

A strange green space rock hailed as perhaps the first meteorite ever discovered from Mercury may be too old to have come from the solar system's innermost planet, some scientists say.

Last month, scientists announced that the green-hued meteorite NWA 7325 shares many chemical similarities with Mercury, suggesting it may be the first known visitor from the small, sun-scorched planet.

But NWA 7325's advanced age ? it's thought to be more than 4.5 billion years old ? casts some doubt on this interpretation, some scientists have stressed, citing the example of Earth's moon to help make their point.

"The moon began to crystallize 4.5 billion years ago, but we don't have any 4.5 billion-year-old meteorites from the moon, because all of those rocks would have been bashed to smithereens during the Late Heavy Bombardment that pockmarked the moon with craters between 4 [billion] and 3.8 billion years ago," meteorite expert Randy Korotev, of Washington University in St. Louis, said in a statement.

?The same thing would have happened on Mercury, so the question is, How did this rock survive for that long?" Korotev added. "There's no sign of it being brecciated, or busted up."

Still, Korotev doesn't rule out the possibility that NWA 7325, which was found in Morocco last year, is indeed from Mercury. Further tests could help researchers get a better sense of the meteorite's origins, he added.

A test with the potential to be particularly informative would assess NWA 7325's levels of "cosmogenic radionuclides," unstable atoms generated by exposure to cosmic radiation. "If this stone had exceedingly high cosmogenic nuclides, that would be an argument for it coming from Mercury, because Mercury is so close to the sun," Korotev said.

Green meteorite sparks talk of Mercury

While NWA 7325's exact provenance remains unclear at the moment, scientists do know something about its origins. The meteorite is an achondrite, a relatively rare type of space rock that comes from a planet or big asteroid ? something large that generated enough internal heat early in its history to melt partially, producing a metallic core surrounded by rock.

And researchers have a pretty good idea of where its green color comes from.

"I once analyzed bottles to see what made them blue or green," Korotev said. "The greenest bottle had 660 parts per million chromium, but some of the mineral components of NWA 7325 have 7,000 parts per million chromium. That's why it's green."

How To Mine Bitcoins

7dwarfsMining bitcoins – a process that helps manage bitcoin transactions as well as create new “wealth” – are the new Beanie Babies. Luckily for us, however, bitcoins seem to be going up in value and should maintain their value over time, unlike your mint condition Tiny the stuffed Chihuahua. But how do you get bitcoins? You can begin by buying them outright, but the market is currently wild. At $188 per coin, the direction of the bitcoin is anyone’s guess right now and, unlike equities, these things don’t split. In short, you should probably mine. But what is bitcoin mining? Think of it as work done by groups of people to find large prime numbers or trying keys to decrypt a file. You can read a lot more about it here but just understand that for every block mined you get 25 coins or, at current rates, $4,722.25. Currently a single bitcoin is valued at $188, an alarming result that is probably caused by money movements related to Cyprus and a general bubble-like excitement over the platform in general. In fact, many wager that the DDOS attacks on many bitcoin-related services are direct action by hackers to inject instability in order to reduce the price. As it stands, mining solo is very nearly deprecated. The process of finding blocks is now so popular and the difficulty of finding a block so high that it could take over three years to generate any coins. While you could simply set a machine aside and have it run the algorithms endlessly, the energy cost and equipment deprecation will eventually cost more than the actual bitcoins are worth. Pooled mining, however, is far more lucrative. Using a service like “Slush’s pool” (more on that later) you can split the work among a ground of people. Using this equation: (25 BTC + block fees – 2% fee) * (shares found by user’s workers) / (total shares in current round) While this is simplified, it is basically how the system works. You work for shares in a block and when complete you get a percentage of the block based on the number of workers alongside you, less fees. Using this method, I have been able to raise about $1.50 over the weekend by running a dormant PC. The astute among you will note that I probably used twice that amount of electricity.
