(AP) ? President Barack Obama is surveying damage from raging wildfires in Colorado, getting a sense of the devastation as he arrives aboard Air Force One.

Obama viewed the scene from above as his airplane made its descent into Colorado. Plumes of smoke from the mountains were visible as Obama arrived.

Obama declared a "major disaster" in the state early Friday and promised federal aid. He is expected to get a firsthand look at the devastation, which has led to the evacuation of more than 30,000 people in what is now the most destructive wildfire in state history.

Colorado is one of the nation's top swing states and expected to be heavily contested by Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney this year.

Seasonally adjusted ?initial? declined to 386,000 claims from last week?s revised 392,000 claims while seasonally adjusted ?continued? claims declined by 15,000 resulting in an ?insured? unemployment rate of 2.6%.

Since the middle of 2008 though, two federal government sponsored ?extended? unemployment benefit programs (the ?extended benefits? and ?EUC 2008? from recent legislation) have been picking up claimants that have fallen off of the traditional unemployment benefits rolls.

Currently there are some 2.70 million people receiving federal ?extended? unemployment benefits.
Taken together with the latest 3.10 million people that are currently counted as receiving traditional continued unemployment benefits, there are 5.80 million people on state and federal unemployment rolls.

MONEY MARKETS-U.S. repo rate rises on debt supply - Reuters

Fri Jun 29, 2012 12:53pm EDT

* U.S. dealers seek funding for Treasuries settlement

* Investors move back to stocks, less cash to lend

* Deferred Eurodollars fall, front months steady

By Richard Leong

NEW YORK, June 29 (Reuters) - A key borrowing cost for Wall Street banks rose on Friday as they sought funds to pay their purchases at this week's U.S. Treasury debt auctions that raised $99 billion for the federal government.

The supply of dollars in the $1.6 trillion tri-party repurchase agreement market -- where Wall Street banks pledge U.S. Treasuries and other assets as collateral in exchange for cash -- shrank as investors moved money back into the stock market and other riskier investments after European leaders took further steps to manage their region's fiscal mess.

"The market was surprised since everyone seemed to be at odds heading into the summit," said Mike Lin, director of U.S. funding at TD Securities in New York.

Euro zone leaders struck a deal on Friday to allow their rescue fund infuse cash directly into struggling banks from next year and intervene on bond markets to support troubled member states.

The interest rate on repos due on Monday was last bid at 0.24 percent, 2 basis points higher than Thursday and up 13 basis points at the end of the first quarter.

"There is just a lot of collateral around at the end of the quarter and there is less money to fund them," Lin said.

Some of the cash was channeled into stocks on Friday. The three Wall Street indexes were up nearly 2 percent in midday trading.

Primary dealers, those top Wall Street firms that do business directly with the U.S. Federal Reserve bought more than half of the two-year, five-year and seven-year debt at this week's U.S. Treasury auctions.

Dealers and other investors who bought the bonds must pay the U.S. Treasury on Monday.

During the course of reselling their purchases in the open market, primary dealers typically seek funding for their Treasuries positions.

The quarter's steady rise in repo rates stemmed from the growing supply of short-term U.S. Treasury debt in the open market due to the Fed's Operation Twist.

Under Operation Twist, these Wall Street firms must bid on the short-dated Treasuries that the Fed sells for this bond program. The Fed in turn has used the proceeds to buy long-dated Treasuries with the goal to lower mortgage rates and other longer-term borrowing costs.

In addition to a general rise in short-term interest rates, primary dealers are stuck with more short-dated debt supply.

As of June 20, they owned $96.7 billion in Treasuries, of which $60.2 billion are in coupon debt that matures in three years or less, according to the latest Fed data available.

At the start of Operation Twist which began last October, they held a combined $11.9 billion in Treasuries. Primary dealers had $4.8 billion in net short positions in coupon debt that matures in three years or less.

Last week, the Fed extended Twist, which was initially scheduled to expire on Friday, into year-end with planned purchases of $267 billion long-dated debt. This is on top of $400 billion it already bought.

MIXED SIGNALS

Other parts of the dollar funding market suggested lingering concerns about the banking system due to the sovereign debt problem in Europe and signs of slowing global economic growth, analysts said.

Eurodollar futures for delivery after 2013 fell anywhere from 1.0 to 8.5 basis points on Friday, although most front-month contracts were unchanged to up 1.5 basis points.

The steadiness in front-month Eurodollar futures helped narrow the risk premium on two-year interest rate swaps over Treasuries by 0.25 basis points to 24.25 basis points.

Two-year swap spread, which is seen as a gauge on investor confidence, ended essentially unchanged in second quarter after flirting with 38.00 basis points in early June on fears over Spain's troubled banks and Greece's possible exit from the euro zone.

In offshore dollar lending, the London interbank rate on three-month dollars was unchanged at 0.46060 percent.

This rate benchmark for $370 trillion of financial products worldwide was down from 0.46815 percent at the end of March.

A3Photo by Angus Hooper III | keep Your Pet Fish Safe and Sound

Nowadays, more and more people keep fish as their favorite pet which bring them a lot of fun. However, fish sometimes also falls sick, therefore, people need to learn to take good care of their pet fish. For city dwellers, who live in apartments, keeping fish as pets is the perfect option. If you do not have the space or the budget to go for a big aquarium, you can opt for a small fishbowl and keep a pair of goldfish.

Goldfish is one of the most popular pet fish and there are many people who prefer jaw crusher keeping goldfish to any other kind of fish. But sometimes you might find that your pet goldfish is lying on the bottom of fishbowl, unable to swim. It would seem that your goldfish is dying. To save your goldfish, there are a couple of things that you can do.

Ways to Save a Dying Goldfish

There are some methods that you can employ to revive a dying goldfish. Here are a few of them.

Quarantine the Goldfish

One of the first line of action that you have to take to save a dying goldfish is to separate the sick goldfish from the other fish in the fishbowl or aquarium. This is done so that the sick fish does not contaminate the water and make the other healthy fish sick. Once you have removed the dying goldfish from the fishbowl, place it in a separate bowl which has been filled with filtered water or bottled mineral water. It is advisable that you do not fill the bowl with tap water as there might be contaminants in the tap water which might be making your goldfish sick.

Change the Water

Once you have isolated the sick goldfish from the other fish, it is a good idea to change the water in the bowl a couple of times. At this point of time it is advisable that you do not add any additives or salt to the water. Keep the fish under observation for a couple of hours. If you are lucky, your goldfish will respond to this simple water change and will be up and swimming like a healthy fish. stone crusher plant:http://www.china-mills.com/p6.html
china jaw crusher:http://www.hxjqchina.com/n69.html

Start Medications

If your goldfish is still lying on the bottom of the fishbowl even after the water change, then you need to start with medications. But first you need to look out for signs of diseases. For cloudy eyes, slime on body, tail and fin rot as well as bloody spots and swim bladder disease, you can use a fungus eliminator. A fungus eliminator is an anti-protozoan an antibacterial treatment which can be purchased from any pet shop.

Feed Shelled and Boiled Frozen Peas

Sometimes in our enthusiasm to feed our fish, we overfeed them. If a particular goldfish overeats, it might end up suffering from swim bladder disorder. If your dying goldfish has a distended belly, sinks to the bottom of the bowl or floats to the top upside-down, it might be suffering from swim bladder disorder. To treat this disorder, thaw some frozen peas and boil them until they are tender. Then skin the peas and mash them up. Feed this to your ailing goldfish and it is sure to get well soon.

(AP) ? On the verge of victory, Maria Sharapova briefly lost her bearings.

Sharapova's old serving problems resurfaced Thursday at Wimbledon, costing her the second set before she recovered to beat dangerous Tsvetana Pironkova, 7-6 (3), 6-7 (3), 6-0.

The Court 1 match took two days and ended three minutes after Serena Williams concluded her second-round victory on Centre Court, beating qualifier Melinda Czink 6-1, 6-4.

It was a good day for Americans ? Andy Roddick, Mardy Fish and No. 126-ranked Brian Baker also advanced, as did No. 28-seeded Christina McHale and Varvara Lepchenko.

The No. 1-ranked Sharapova saved five set points in the first set and led the second set 3-1 when play was halted Wednesday because of darkness. She lost the first two games when the match resumed, and double-faulted on her first three service points in the tiebreaker.

"It felt like two matches in a way," Sharapova said. "Today I wanted to start off really well because I knew I was up a break. Didn't go according to plan. Really served sloppy."

Sharapova underwent shoulder surgery in 2008 and has been prone to double-faults, but in the final set she had no trouble with her serve ? or anything else. She won 21 of the last 27 points and finished with just 11 unforced errors.

Sharapova said she didn't make any major changes down the stretch.

"We were playing with the same balls; I played with the same racket," she said. "I just started doing things a little bit better."

Pironkova, ranked 38th, beat Venus Williams at Wimbledon each of the past two years,

"If she played on grass 365 days a year, she'd be top five probably," Sharapova said. "She has the perfect game for it."

But Sharapova's at her best in winner-take-all sets. She improved her record in three-set matches to 9-0 this year and 21-1 since the beginning of 2011.

She has won 14 consecutive matches, including the French Open this month to complete a career Grand Slam.

While Sharapova battled an erratic serve, with eight aces and 10 double-faults, four-time champion Serena Williams had no such trouble. She won 27 of 28 points on her first serve, including 10 aces, and never faced a break point. Czink twice whiffed on returns.

"I love my serve," Williams said, "and I love feeling good when I serve."

The sixth-seeded Williams could meet Sharapova in the final next week. A 17-year-old Sharapova defeated Williams for the Wimbledon title in 2004.

Roddick advanced to the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time in 2012 when he beat Bjorn Phau 6-3, 7-6 (1), 6-3. Roddick is seeded only 30th and fended off questions in recent months about retirement before he won his fifth grass-court title last week as a wild card at Eastbourne.

"The good patches and the bad patches are all between the ears," Roddick said. "I'm still enjoying myself on the tennis courts, so it's not for anybody else to say whether I can or can't play."

Fish, seeded 10th, needed more than four hours to beat British wild card James Ward, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-3. Fish is playing in his first tournament since undergoing a medical procedure in May for an accelerated heartbeat.

Baker, a qualifier whose career was derailed for 6? years by injuries, is into the third round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time. He beat Jarkko Nieminen 6-0, 6-2, 6-4.

"I was definitely not expecting to get through so easily," Baker said.

The 20-year-old McHale advanced to the third round at her fourth consecutive Grand Slam tournament when she beat Mathilde Johansson 7-5, 7-5. McHale next plays No. 8-seeded Kerber with a chance to reach the fourth round at a major for the first time.

"I am still not finding my best tennis consistently over the two matches I have played," McHale said. "I still feel I can be a lot more offensive."

Lepchenko, ranked 53rd, advanced to the third round at Wimbledon for the first time by beating No. 31 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-6 (4), 6-4.

No. 2-seeded Victoria Azarenka defeated Romina Oprandi 6-2, 6-0.

British hopeful Andy Murray faced only one break point and beat big-serving Ivo Karlovic 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (4). Kei Nishikori became the first Japanese man in 17 years to reach the third round at Wimbledon by beating Florent Serra 6-3, 7-5, 6-2.

Sara Errani committed only five unforced errors and beat Anne Keothavong of Britain 6-1, 6-1. The 25-year-old Errani, an Italian who has blossomed in Grand Slam competition this year, matched her best Wimbledon showing by advancing to the third round.

She was the French Open runner-up this month to Sharapova, and she's 12-2 in major tournaments in 2012. She began this year with a career record of 15-17 at majors.

Playing the day's first match on Court 2, the 10th-seeded Errani erased all three break points she faced and won in 61 minutes. That was a grueling effort compared with Wednesday, when she played only one point to complete a victory suspended overnight because of rain.

No. 7 David Ferrer defeated Kenny de Schepper 7-6 (1), 6-2, 6-4 and will next play Roddick. No. 13 Gilles Simon, who stirred debate this week when he said men should be paid more than women at tennis tournaments, lost to Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

Kerber beat Ekaterina Makarova 7-5, 6-3.

Music Review: Arild Andersen, Tommy Smith, Scottish National Jazz ...

In October 2010, a very lucky audience was privileged to hear a concert commemorating some of the amazing music released by the ECM label over the past 40 years. There have been a number of significant events associated with this milestone, and Celebration is one of the finest. Manfred Eicher's vision to release music of the highest quality, and to release it with an attention to detail unmatched in the industry is a truly one of a kind story. Only a handful of former "indies" have made it this far, and none of them have retained their founder's personal vision quite the way ECM has.

For this concert, Arild Andersen is lead soloist, and his double-bass playing is a marvel. He is joined by the tenor sax of Tommy Smith, who also directed the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra. The Stevenson Hall at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is where the event took place, and the sound is magnificent.

Six compositions by six musicians who have been integral to the history of ECM were chosen for the program. It is certainly hard to argue with the importance of Dave Holland, Jan Garbarek, Chick Corea, Trygve Seim, Keith Jarrett, and Arild Andersen himself to the history of not only the label, but to jazz itself. Listening to this concert, one is reminded of just how much Mr. Eicher and his label opened up the genre over the years.

In 1969, "jazz" meant either trying to "outdo" the powerful redefinition of the boundaries, ala John Coltrane's successors. The other side was fusion, which was being created by Miles Davis and others. There were also the "traditional" outfits, who playing what we now call the "nostalgia circuit," allowing their fans to relive the glory days of swing.

ECM brought a whole new sensibility to the music. Manfred Eicher's ears were wide open, and he heard a whole new form of music. The music released on ECM proved to be a very viable product in the marketplace. Yet, while sales are obviously a consideration, the label has never seemed to be focused on them. Manfred Eicher has taken chance after chance on artists that he obviously saw something in, "commercial" or not.

This concert certainly reflects that sensibility. The set opens with "May Dance," written by Dave Holland. What really stands out is the tenor sax of Tommy Smith on this track. And when the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra comes in, they lift the piece to a whole new level.

The momentum builds with the next track, Jan Garbarek's "Molde Canticle (Part One)" The interplay between Andersen's double-bass and the Orchestra is incredible. I must say that the funky "rubberband" sounds of Arild Anderson's playing in contrast to the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra offers up an amazing experience in diversity.

Chick Corea was certainly a "name" artist when he came to ECM, but that did not stop him from pursuing his own, very distinctive music. He is a performer who has never been content to rest on his laurels, as "Crystal Silence" amply displays. Once again, the interplay between the bass and full orchestra is outstanding. One of the most emotionally engaging moments of the entire concert comes as the song closes. You can literally hear a pin-drop as Arild Andersen's bass takes things out in a most captivating fashion.

The whole performance feels this way. And that may be the key to the success of ECM as a record label all these years. Regardless of any criticisms, commercial success, (or failure for that matter), the label has always reflected the love of music of its founder. Celebration is an album that manages to honor the history of the label and some its greatest artists, while at the same time offering an opportunity for all of this music to be reinterpreted in a most satisfying manner. Celebration is a triumph for everyone involved.

CitusDB_logoAs companies from small startups to large enterprise continue to generate an ever-increasing amount of data, the demand for affordable and scalable databases also increases. Typically, this market has been the domain of large vendors like Oracle, but besides them and the usual open-source players, we've also seen a growing number of closed-source startups enter this space. Citus Data, which is launching version 1.0 of its CitusDB today, is the latest startup to challenge these incumbents.

PPC Definitions - Online Business Reviews

Pay-Per-Click marketing has become an online phenomenon, with marketers only paying for traffic they receive. As Internet marketing has evolved, pay-per-click is seen by many as the middle ground between paying per impression and paying per sale. Advertisers only pay when they receive traffic that may or may not be targeted.

The pay-per-click advertisements are usually displayed with the advertisement from the highest paying bidder in the top position.

Navigating the complex web of Internet marketing, publishers and marketers are often confronted with terms that seem foreign. This simple guide will assist marketers in navigating the Pay-Per-Click marketing model.

Bid - The amount that an advertiser is willing to pay for a click on a specific keyword.

Budget - The amount of money that an advertiser sets aside for an advertising campaign. Different publishers allow for advertisers to set daily, weekly or monthly budgets.

Clickthrough Rate (CTR) - The percentage of clicks on a link. This is usually a percentage based on the total number of clicks divided by the number of impressions that an advertisement has received.

Conversion Rate - The relationship between visitors to a web site and actions considered to be a "conversion", such as a sale or request to receive more information: the percentage of people whose clicks have resulted in a sale or desired action in relation to the total number of clicks on an advertisement.

Cost Per Click (CPC) - The cost or cost-equivalent paid per click-through to an advertiser's website.

Cost Per Thousand (CPM) - The amount an advertiser pays for one thousand advertisement impressions, regardless of the consumer's subsequent actions.

Delisting - The removal of a listing as a result of inaction or poor performance.

GeoTargetting - An advertisement targeted at a specific geographical region, area or location.

Impressions - The number of times an advertisement is viewed by web surfers.

Keywords - Search terms or phrases that are related to an advertisement or ad copy.

Landing Page - The specific web page that a visitor ultimately reaches after clicking an advertisement. Often, this page is optimized for a specific keyword term or phrase.

Linking Text - The text that is contained within a link.

Pay Per Click (PPC) - Advertising model in which advertisers pay for click-throughs to their website. Ads are served based on keywords or themes.

Rank - How well a particular web page or web site is listed in a search engine or advertising results.

Return On Investment (ROI) - The percentage of profit that results in a marketing or advertising campaign. Naturally, advertisers want the amount of money made to exceed the money spent.

Understanding the above terminology will help marketers navigate the pay-per-click advertising model, which has emerged on the Internet and become one of the leading advertising models in the online world.

Israel jittery after Brotherhood victory in Egypt

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The Muslim Brotherhood victory in Egyptian presidential elections, announced Sunday, has raised fears in Israel that its strategic 1979 peace agreement with its southern neighbor could be in danger.

In contrast, in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, ecstatic residents flocked into the streets, fired guns in the air and handed out candy in celebration.

Israel's peace agreement with Egypt, its first with an Arab country, is a cornerstone of Israeli security. The agreement ended decades of hostilities, with to five wars and thousands of deaths.

While relations have never been warm, Egypt has upheld the deal, keeping its bordering Sinai peninsula largely demilitarized, allowing the Israeli military to focus on other hostile borders with the Palestinians, Syria and Lebanon.

In a statement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he respected the results of Egypt's democratic process and hoped the peace agreement would remain intact.

"Israel expects to continue cooperation with the Egyptian government on the basis of the peace agreement between the two countries, which is of interest to the two peoples and contributes to regional stability," he said.

With the Egyptian military still the ultimate power in Egypt, senior Israeli defense officials who maintain contacts with Egypt said Sunday that they do not expect any immediate changes in relations. Over the long term, they warned, the Brotherhood may seek to cancel the peace agreement. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a sensitive security assessment.

The Muslim Brotherhood, founded in Egypt in 1928, is a pan-Arabic movement that favors creation of a Muslim state that encompasses the entire Middle East. It has never given up that goal, but as it gains official power in Egypt, winning parliamentary elections and now the presidency, it has indicated pragmatic willingness to accept the existence of Israel.

Addressing his nation Sunday evening, Morsi declared he had a "message of peace. We will respect all international agreements," he said, without mentioning Israel.

Although some Brotherhood leaders have said they will never meet with an Israeli official, they have been careful to say they would not cancel the treaty. Like many other Egyptians, they favor amendments ? primarily to allow more Egyptian troops into the Sinai. Israel has already permitted an increase of troops there, demanding that Egypt bring violent extremists under control.

Armed gangs are believed to control wide swaths of territory, smugglers have helped thousands of African migrant workers sneak into Israel and various Arab militant groups, some believed to have ties to al-Qaida, operate freely.

Eli Shaked, a former Israeli ambassador to Egypt, said the Egyptians would "have a lot to lose" if they canceled the peace, including Western investment and billions of dollars in U.S. aid. Even so, he warned, the treaty was not safe.

In the Gaza Strip, tens of thousands of joyous Palestinians took to the streets across the territory after the result was announced.

Gunmen fired automatic weapons in the air, and mosque loudspeakers reverberated with prayers. Some revelers handed out candy on street corners.

The celebrations were marred when one person was killed and six others wounded by celebratory gunfire.

Hamas is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood. The Brotherhood's ascent to power in Egypt has raised hopes that Gaza's relations with its powerful southern neighbor will improve.

"Today is new era for us in Gaza. The days of suffering due to the Egyptian authorities are over, said Rawhi Talab, 51, a food store owner.

Hamas leader Mahmoud Zahar told a rally in downtown Gaza that "the heart of Jerusalem has started to beat again," adding, "We are not asking Egypt to fight on our behalf." Hamas does not recognize Israel.

Mubarak collaborated with Israel in a blockade of Gaza. The blockade, first imposed after Hamas-linked gunmen captured an Israeli soldier in 2006, was tightened the following year when Hamas violently seized power in the seaside strip.

Israel said the blockade was needed to prevent arms shipments to Hamas. Under heavy international pressure, Israel lifted some limits two years ago and Egypt eased travel restrictions after Mubarak's ouster.

Morsi has not yet said what plans he has for dealing with Gaza, which shares a 15-kilometer (nine-mile) border with Egypt, which ruled Gaza from 1948 to 1967.

Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh phoned Morsi to congratulate him on becoming Egypt's first Islamist president. "This is a victory for all Arabs and Muslims, and this is God's promise to his believers," the Hamas leader said.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, a secular leader who governs in the West Bank, also congratulated Morsi. "The president expressed his respect for the choice of the great Egyptian people," according to a statement from the official Wafa news agency.

The leaders of Kuwait and Bahrain sent cables to Morsi congratulating him, according to statements carried by their official news agencies.

Hunter Stuart: Even With Universal Health Care, People Can Slip Through the Cracks

Growing up in Concord, Mass., I was close friends with a boy my age named Jeremy*. In sixth grade he was the darling of Concord Middle School: he was handsome and charming, a star hockey player and a champion freestyle skier.

In high school, he and I stayed close, although I went to a private school in Boston and Jeremy went to Concord High. We used to skateboard together almost every day. We went swimming at Walden Pond in the summer and took the train into the city to see concerts together on the weekends.

Jeremy dropped out of school after he turned sixteen and got a job as a food-runner at the nicest restaurant in town. He also worked construction part time -- he was terrific with his hands. He could lay a roof on a house or build a stairway before he turned eighteen. His work was solid, careful. He started earning a lot of money and became financially independent at an age when the rest of us still had to ask our parents for twenty dollars to go to the movies.

Jeremy earned his GED and went to college in Colorado, where he could ski when he wasn't in class. He had it made -- until he ran out of money and had to withdraw from school.

When that happened, he moved back home and got a job, and began saving up so that he could finish getting his college degree.

But he never did.

Jeremy and I lost touch over the years. It's mostly my fault, for not calling enough, for leaving my hometown for New York City, and never looking back.

But I caught up with Jeremy recently in Manhattan, and the story he told me of the past two years of his life was shocking.

Here's what happened:

Out of Luck

Jeremy had a job as a line-chef at an upscale restaurant in Maynard, Mass., until he broke his leg in a skiing accident. This was during the winter of 2011.

The doctors at the local hospital put a steel plate in Jeremy's leg and sent him home, saying he'd be back walking in about four weeks.

But his leg took almost two months to heal. He had to quit his job.

The bills from his leg surgery were around $4,000. They would have been a lot less if he had been insured. But Jeremy had no health insurance, even though he lived in Massachusetts -- a state which passed a health care reform law in 2006 that provides health insurance for low-income residents.

Jeremy had been enrolled the year before, at no cost (MassHealth pays for part or all of your premiums if you're unemployed). But like many people in their twenties Jeremy had changed addresses, and when the re-enrollment form came in the mail six months later, it went to his old apartment.

When MassHealth didn't get a response to their letter, they canceled Jeremy's insurance.

For two months that winter, Jeremy was confined to his bed. Luckily he had his girlfriend and his father to help take care of him. They went shopping for him, cooked for him.

After two months, his leg healed, and Jeremy started looking for work immediately. He traveled by foot, since he doesn't have a license.

Jeremy spent three weeks applying to dozens of jobs before he was offered a part-time gig working for a landscaper in Concord. The job would start the following day. But Jeremy never made it to work.

The Second Injury

Because when he got home that day, exhausted and broke, Jeremy accidentally poured a large pot of scalding water down his legs. (The sink was full of dishes, and Jeremy, in his haste to finish dinner so he could go to sleep and begin work the next day, didn't notice there was a plate under the colander. The water passed through the colander and shot right off the plate and into his stomach.)

The burns were diagnosed as third-degree. Over the next couple weeks, Jeremy returned to the local hospital three times to have skin removed and the pus drained from the burns. (He described the burns to me as looking "like beachballs" and "like raw meat.")

On his third visit, a doctor at the local hospital told him they weren't equipped to handle burns so severe, and that Jeremy needed to see a plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon, in turn, told Jeremy he'd have to go to Mass General Hospital in Boston to have skin graft surgery.

Jeremy traveled all the way to Boston three separate times for skin graft surgery. Between the two hospitals and the plastic surgeon's consultation (which alone cost $1,800), Jeremy owed about $9,000 for the burn treatment, on top of the $4,000 he already owed for leg surgery.

Jeremy had re-applied for health insurance as soon as he broke his leg, but there was a processing period for the paperwork that delayed his application for five months, during which time he had to pay the full amount of his hospital bills.

When he saw how much debt was piling up, Jeremy applied for financial aid from MassHealth. The hospital helped him fill out the application, and told him he'd been enrolled in the system.

But nevertheless, the bills came in the mail saying he had to pay the full amount. To this day Jeremy doesn't know why he didn't receive financial aid.

No Safety Net

Jeremy was unable to work for another two months as he recovered from the burns. Eventually -- after his roommate moved out of the apartment, and he couldn't afford rent -- Jeremy had to move out.

He moved in with his dad and his dad's second-wife's family in a rural town 40 miles west of Boston.

He had no where else to go.

Over a year later, Jeremy is still there, and needs to save up at least $15,000 before he can move out. He needs to pay a deposit on an apartment, get a car, get the car insured.

The problem is, he only makes $15 an hour at his job -- and his boss only lets him work two days a week. Jeremy fought to work more days but his boss couldn't afford it.

Jeremy picks up some extra work roofing, but the money still isn't enough.

And his debt from the hospital bills has ruined his credit.

Life On Hold

Jeremy is the first person to admit that much of this is his own fault. He should have given his new address to MassHealth, he should have been better about keeping track of the paperwork.

He should have been more careful skiing.

But to me, Jeremy's story is an example of why socialized health care still isn't enough. Even though the program has been in place for six years, even though it's been updated and revised to make it better, to make it more effective, even though it was designed to make sure the less-fortunate among us -- people like Jeremy -- don't slip through the cracks, it still isn't enough.

It will take Jeremy years to pay off his debt, and years more to repair his credit so that he can finish college and get a job that makes full use of how smart and talented he is.

Until then, his life is on hold.

Islamist Morsi declared Egypt's president

Muslim Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi was declared on Sunday as the first president of Egypt since a popular uprising ousted Hosni Mubarak, capping a tumultuous and divisive election.

Morsi, who ran against Mubarak-era premier Ahmed Shafiq, won 51.73 percent of the vote after a race that polarised the nation.

"The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al-Ayat," said the head of the electoral commission, Faruq Sultan.

Morsi's victory marks the first time Islamists have taken the presidency of the Arab World?s most populous nation, but recent moves by the ruling military to consolidate its power have rendered the post toothless.

Morsi will give a televised address at 1800 GMT, spokesman Yasser Ali told AFP.

Tens of thousands of Morsi supporters celebrated in Cairo's Tahrir Square, waving flags and posters of the Islamist leader, who was jailed during the uprising that overthrew Mubarak early last year.

"God is greatest" and "down with military rule" they chanted as some set off firecrackers minutes after the electoral commission formally declared the result.

Across Cairo, cars sounded their horns and chants of "Morsi, Morsi" were heard.

Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes against Shafiq's 12,347,380, Sultan said. The election, in which more than 50 million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, saw a 51.8 percent turnout.

Morsi resigned from his posts in the Muslim Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party, which he headed, after he was declared the winner, the Brotherhood announced.

Military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who took power when Hosni Mubarak was forced to resign in February last year, congratulated Morsi on his win, state television announced.

And the interim head of the Coptic church, many of whose faithful have feared the rise of Islamists, also congratulated Morsi.

Shafiq supporters who had gathered to hear the result with his campaign team in the suburbs of Cairo were devastated by the result.

Some women screamed and others cried as several men held their heads between their hands in despair.

"It's a very sad day for Egypt. I don't think Morsi is the winner. I'm very sad that Egypt will be represented by this man and this group," Shafiq supporter Maged told AFP.

The capital was tense before the announcement, with the city's notoriously busy streets deserted and shops and schools closed.

Extra troops and police were deployed as military helicopters flew overhead.

The road to parliament was closed to traffic, and security was tightened around vital establishments as Egyptians waited nervously for the result.

The election has polarised the nation, dividing those who feared a return to the old regime under Shafiq from others who wanted to keep religion out of politics and who fear the Brotherhood would stifle personal freedoms.

Shafiq ran on a strong law-and-order platform, pledging to restore security and stability. He is himself a retired general, but as a Mubarak-era minister he is reviled by the activists who spearheaded the 2011 revolt.

President-elect Morsi was the Islamists' fallback representative after their deputy leader Khairat El-Shater was disqualified.

In campaigning he sought to allay the fears of secular groups and the sizeable Coptic Christian minority by promising a diverse and inclusive political system.

On Saturday, two massive Cairo protests duelled for supremacy.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters thronged Tahrir Square, with hundreds spending the night there. "Morsi, Morsi, God is greatest," they chanted.

Across the city in the Nasr City neighbourhood, thousands of Shafiq supporters held up pictures of him and of Tantawi, chanting: "The people and the army are one."

"Down with the rule of the Supreme Guide," they shouted, referring to the head of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Both Morsi and Shafiq had claimed victory in the election for a successor to Mubarak, and tensions heightened after the electoral commission delayed announcing the official outcome.

The delay in announcing the result of the June 16-17 run-off, initially scheduled for Thursday, had raised raised suspicions that the outcome of the election was being negotiated rather than counted.

On Friday, the SCAF warned it would deal "with utmost firmness and strength" with any attempts to harm public interests.

The Brotherhood warned against tampering with the election results, but also said it had no intention of instigating violence.

It has rejected a constitutional declaration by the military that strips away any gains made by the Islamist group since the popular uprising which forced Mubarak to stand down in February last year.

The document dissolves the Islamist-led parliament and gives the army a broad say in government policy and control over the new constitution. It was adopted just days after a justice ministry decree granted the army powers of arrest.

Stranger than fiction: Germany-Greece eurocrisis invades the soccer pitch

The political loggerheads between Germany and Greece have defined the European financial crisis. Now, the struggle hits the soccer field in Friday's Euro 2012 quarterfinal.

By Michael Steininger,?Correspondent / June 22, 2012

A soccer fan, face painted with the colors of Greece's national flag, watches another having his face painted with the german national flag colors before the Euro 2012 soccer championship quarterfinal match between Germany and Greece in Gdansk, Poland, Friday.

Sport is war minus the shooting, George Orwell once said. The European Football Championships 2012, currently being held in Poland and Ukraine, have so far been a fairly peaceful affair. Only Poland against Russia was a politically loaded match, illustrating deep-seated animosities harking back to decades of difficult relations between the two countries. Almost inevitably there were scuffles in the streets around the stadium.

But the soccer tournament's match tonight will happen against the backdrop of a very modern conflict: Germany vs. Greece.

When Greece made it through the first round of Euro 2012, the success was a boost to the self-confidence of a nation rattled by months of recession and political uncertainty. When Germany learned who they would have to play in the quarterfinals, you could almost hear the collective intake of breath by political Berlin.

?I am looking forward to our cooperation, which will enhance the traditionally deep friendship between our two nations,? German Chancellor Angela Merkel wrote in her congratulatory message to Greece?s new prime minister, Antonis Samaras.

But Mrs. Merkel?s unwavering refusal to renegotiate the harsh conditions for Greece?s two bailout packages ? strict austerity, privatization of state assets, reform of state authorities, and tax collection ? has made her very unpopular among Greeks, and that emotion has permeated into soccer.

?I hope this match will be Angela Merkel?s first and last at these championships,? Greek goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis told his nation's media, referring to the fact that the chancellor is going to attend the match in Gdansk. Greek newspapers urged their national squad to ?push Germany out of the Euro.? And even Germans are not sure if Merkel?s presence in the stadium will be a good idea.

?I truly hope that Mr. Samaras is going to be there too, sitting next to her,? says German columnist Hans-Ulrich J?rges. ?Otherwise the Greeks really believe they are playing against Merkel.?

Here is the German dilemma: Of course they want to win the match. But do they want to do so at the price of more Greek misery? A look into the Twittersphere reveals that many Germans would answer that question with a resounding ?Yes.? ?Dear Greeks, score one goal against us and we ask our money back,? a German Twitter user threatens. Another advises the Greeks that losing the match ?is free of charge.? And there is this picture being re-Tweeted over and over of the Greek national squad's jersey sporting the logo of the German finance ministry as sponsor.

There's been no such malice from German politicians, though, and according to Mr. J?rges, they are well-advised to keep their cool. ?The chancellor should have gone to Greece to explain the German course in the eurocrisis,? he says. ?Instead she left that to the German tabloids ? a grave mistake.?

Whatever the outcome of the match, Germany could claim responsibility. ?The whole DNA of our team is German,? says Christos Satirokopoulos, one of Greece?s most popular sports commentators. When Greece won the European Championship in 2004, their coach was Otto Rehhagel, a German who taught the team ?how unity, concentration and discipline can take you very far,? Mr. Satirokopulos says. ?And just as it took time to reform the squad, it will take time to reform the country.?

You Can Find Out About Home Based Businesses On The Web

Being successful at a home-based business is not every person?s fortune, but you should not let that stop you from trying it out. Especially today when there are many computer home-based businesses that can be put in place for a surprisingly low cost. All it takes is an inexpensive, high-speed Internet access, and the readiness to spend time doing the research. As opposed to a local brick-and-mortar business, which is costly to set up, and is limited to local customers, your computer business can be world wide. Everyone in the world with internet access is a potential client.

There are many opportunities you might be interested in trying, if you are intent on giving a web business a try. To make a start you most certainly don?t need to be an IT nerd, but being familiar with using a computer would be useful. It is generally being familiar with a subject or activity, like a hobby, which is vital for online success, and not so much your technical skills. To illustrate this, folks who are good at creative writing could look at a web-based copywriting business. Content is always popular, so a writer could also work on an independent basis, picking up writing jobs from people who are not good at it. The secret, if you are able to provide a certain skill, like content in our writer?s example, is to find those individuals who have a need for it and sell it to them. Prepare a portfolio of your work, do a little bit of marketing, and, hey presto! you have a business.

Online auction web sites are another avenue from which many people are making decent money. It?s likely you have lots of products already that can be sold online, or you can buy products at wholesale and sell at retail price. Online auction websites, such as eBay, do the hard work of bringing the buyers to your offers. What?s needed from you is to fix the price for your merchandise, add it to the sales listings and wait for shoppers to purchase it. As soon as your product is sold, you get sent the funds and then you have the product delivered to the customer.

A lot of erstwhile hurdles and obstructions have been wiped out by the advance of technology. Given a computer everyone can now launch a business. Not only does the internet have lots of products to sell, but there is enough information on the internet to show you how to sell them. The most effective way to build a business on the web, is to search for somebody who has a business model you like, and pattern yours after theirs.

Instead of a fulltime business you could just be after an extra income stream, which the Internet caters for handsomely. Spend a while on your computer looking for information on starting a business online, and you?ll find a lot of it. The earlier you get moving on your research, the sooner you?ll start seeing money come in.
